Job Description

Direct multiple shifts in a 24/7 manufacturing environment, ensuring safety, production, quality, and cost objectives are met while leading Shipping operations as part of the Extended Plant Leadership Team. The role requires strong communication and people focused leadership skills. 

Internally, the job title will be: Shipping Business Unit Manager.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Provide vision and direction for enhanced organizational capability and process excellence.
  • Lead daily operations with a focus on safety, environmental compliance, and injury prevention.
  • Manage staff, including performance evaluations, promotions, and terminations.
  • Act as a team role model and change-agent, fostering collaboration and goal achievement.
  • Uphold the Corporation’s Code of Business Ethics and Values.
  • Prioritize safety, actively engaging in safety initiatives.
  • Oversee key operational metrics (service, quality, productivity, cost, safety) and drive continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate across functions to resolve issues and streamline manufacturing processes.
  • Manage timekeeping, overtime, and vacation schedules efficiently.
  • Implement cross-training opportunities and handle staffing for economic efficiency.
  • Develop and train staff, maintain performance records, and ensure adherence to policies.
  • Lead Lean Sigma initiatives and drive waste reduction and process simplification.
  • Champion 5S, housekeeping, and recycling programs.
  • Ensure inventory accuracy through consistent cycle counting.
  • Provide backup support as needed.

Operations / Productivity Initiatives

  • Lead and coordinate day-to-day team operations with effective communication.
  • Assist in establishing annual manufacturing budgets.
  • Review and correct cost variances, implementing corrective actions.
  • Manage Shipping Team Managers and enforce company policies.
  • Participate in leadership meetings, communicating goals and priorities.

Leadership / Development Initiatives

  • Mentor and coach direct reports.
  • Lead Production teams in meeting production requirements.
  • Foster a collaborative working relationship with the workforce.
  • Support performance management activities for hourly manufacturing employees.
  • Develop performance and development plans for Shift Team Managers.
  • Ensure effective training and development for employees.

Continuous Improvement / ELS Initiatives

  • Drive standard work and 5S initiatives.
  • Support the implementation of ELS and Six Sigma initiatives.
  • Manage Material Damage and Inventory Adjustment losses.

Safety Training Initiatives

  • Act as a safety champion, modeling appropriate behavior and adherence to safety policies.
  • Provide training and support to the safety team as needed.
  • Conduct accident investigations and manage return-to-work processes.
  • Partner with Occupational Health Nurse to manage return to work/workforce restrictions as appropriate.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 6+ years Operations/Manufacturing experience with 3+ years of leadership experience.
  • Experience in a shipping environment highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of modern manufacturing and improvement strategies.
  • Understanding of financial systems and manufacturing drivers.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
