Job Description

Avery Dennison is seeking a Global (Senior) Research Associate- Films to join the global Polymers, Adhesives and Coatings Center of Excellence (PACE) in Labels and Graphics Materials (LGM). The candidate will support business growth and work to expand Avery Dennison’s competitive advantage through the development of new product technology for pressure-sensitive adhesive labels and graphics materials. Specifically, the individual will work across the global businesses and technical teams and apply material science to identify, develop and deploy novel film chemistries, as well as support cross-functional teams in the commercialization of new product technologies. Excellent problem solving skills, material science and an entrepreneurial mindset will be key to success in the role. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Develop knowledge of Avery Dennison’s businesses and understand short- and long-term development challenges 
  • Advance Avery Dennison’s understanding of polymer film development through application of material science and process knowledge 
  • Design experiments and run polymer film trials on pilot scale assets, including test protocol design and data analysis 
  • Lead generational platform projects and work closely with a team of technology and commercial leaders across the globe
  • Develop and apply various post-processing techniques such as embossing, stretching and annealing as necessary to meet application needs
  • Serve as a company subject matter expert in film processing and resultant structure-property relationships

Qualifications

  • Master's degree with an emphasis in Material Science and Engineering, Polymer Science or Engineering, Polymer Physics, or Chemical Engineering is required. PHD (or equivalent experience) in relevant field is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of structure/property relationships in films, film processing/manufacturing and (melt) rheology 
  • Demonstrated track record of development of new film products from concept to scale‐up
  • Relevant R&D experience : A strong background in cast, extrusion and/or blown film processes
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with demonstrated strong skills in problem solving 
  • Ability to communicate across functions and geographies 
  • Willing to travel up to 20% per year locally and globally
