Job Description

SUMMARY: The Engineering Technology Group is responsible for developing, optimizing, and implementing proprietary process technologies and equipment for our manufacturing plants worldwide, and we are looking for a Scientist to join this creative, collaborative and dynamic team!

Technologies may include; precision coating, extrusion, thermal embossing, drying/curing, lamination and other web-based processes such as printing and label converting. The Principal Scientist will lead and support these projects through all phases of project execution, as he/she will interact with the resources at the Divisions globally, within the Engineering Technology Group, and at the vendors. Key roles would be to identify and define the technical nature and significance of the challenges, drive research and devise solutions based on numerical modeling and experiments, and to provide recommendations to senior management.

Scope:

  • Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in precision coating, extrusion, thermal embossing, drying/curing, lamination, and various other processes in printing and converting
  • Expertise in numerical modeling with open source and commercial software for fluid, thermal, and structural (Multiphysics) numerical simulations. Extensive experience with nonlinear modeling, including nonlinear viscoelastic modeling for polymer process and flows.
  • General knowledge of other related disciplines, especially Mechanical Engineering, as well as modern experimental techniques
  • Process development and improvements in coating, drying, curing, microreplication, and other LGM operations
  • Develop technical solutions to sophisticated problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity, as well as focus on fundamentals and quantification
  • Product and process development, from conception, development, prototyping to implementation
  • Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercise considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long- term perspective, for desired results.
  • Guide the successful completion of major programs and function in a project leadership role. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve major organizational objectives
  • Represent the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.
  • May be responsible for technical direct reports.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Show depth and breadth of knowledge in coating and drying technology capabilities and how it fits into scheme of a global setting
  • Lead efforts to develop numerical simulation capabilities to help resolve sophisticated physical problems in the plants, and to transmit and implement solutions to the technical community and in “layperson’s” terms
  • Utilize and improve legacy numerical simulation codes, and help to build new computational capabilities for ET
  • Lead effort in competitive intelligence to identify what competitors are doing. Exhibit leadership and direction with high visibility projects, assimilate new technology and relay to managers.
  • Demonstrate overall added value to Avery Dennison’s technology and business functions.
  • Identify innovations in the market place and development opportunities based on business strategies and implement these. Identify flaws.
  • Understand product, customer demand and interface. Provide recommendations for capital purchase, equipment. Interact with outside development partners as needed. Lead multi-functional and divisional projects.
  • Summarize critical results and observations. Propose next experimentation. Write in-depth technical reports. Present findings to team and management. Write project plans for multi-functional set of experiments. Write technical papers for internal and external publication as deemed appropriate. Write proposals.
  • Propose and present to Venture Board or Senior Divisional Mgmt.
  • Specialist in Design for Lean Sigma (DFLS) and NPD/Stage gate process
  • Drive innovation, and generate new insights for products and processes. Use business strategies. Bring to bear internal/external experts in network to accomplish goals.
  • Write effective invention disclosure. Conduct patent analysis, search and mapping. Design experiments around and in support of patents. Connect with patent attorney – and effectively follow through. Relay opinion on claims and patent interpretations. Act as IP mentor.
  • Prioritize and run projects. Write project plan based on project objective. Assign tasks and orchestrate project (plan, delegate, and follow through). Use resources, actions and timelines for project. Make recommendations to terminate a project due to feasibility issues. Propose project budget.
  • Lead technology transfer activities (coordinate and delegate activities). Understand and articulate how emerging technologies can be applied to new products.
  • Contribute to company-wide problem-solving solutions. Ability to draw solutions from wide range of colleagues and experience in field. Initiate lead with broad idea. Develop technical solutions to problems which require resourcefulness and creativity.
  • Arrange preparation of sample materials. Initiate lab tests, pilot-plant, production, and field trials. Develop test methods which could be internally or externally executed. Apply expertise including Six Sigma tools and have full knowledge of related subject areas.
  • Delegate, coach, train and retain young-in-career scientists.

Qualifications

  • 4+ Years engineering, research, scientific or related experience. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Solid understanding of a wide variety of engineering concepts, practices and procedures related to design and development; high-volume manufacturing processes, design and set-up; product launches; continuous improvements in product quality and costs; incorporating advancements in technology to product design and manufacturing.
  • Facilitate collaborative decisions with Supply Chain, Quality and Marketing on issues.
  • Incorporate creativity and experience into anticipating and resolving problems and barriers to successful project completion.
  • Maintain accurate and complete product and project documentation.
  • Understanding of applicable computer systems, such as Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes and function specific software.
