Job Description

ABOUT YOUR ROLE:

Avery Dennison's Printer Solutions Division is seeking a DevOps/Infrastructure Automation Engineer with expertise in building and maintaining automated infrastructure.  The position requires knowledge of Amazon Web Services and the networking/security constructs of their Public Cloud environment. 

The DevOps Engineer role will require hands-on programming and iterative development for various infrastructure components including web stacks, database systems, security tools, and networking/cloud environment configurations.  You will work closely with the Engineering teams to ensure proper software support, monitoring, and security policies. The DevOps engineer plays a lead in design, build, and operational management of highly scalable SaaS platform and promotes, documents, and implements systems infrastructure best practices, building tools that allow AD to meet customer and market needs.

The ideal candidate must be familiar with cloud infrastructure design, planning and implementation. Strong competencies in planning, project management, leadership, and organization and experience with technical deployments as a part of large-scale technology projects are required for this role. A successful candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational, time management, and analytical skills. Very strong attention to detail and project focus are required.

The DevOps engineer leads key technical initiatives and governance to streamline operational processes across systems, departments and service providers. Also provides architectural guidance for system and service design to improve security, scalability, reliability and adaptability of our growing SaaS footprint.

The DevOps engineer takes quality very seriously and works to quantify and evaluate new ways of measuring quality to ensure application uptime and a positive user experience, and that we continue to deliver excellent customer experiences.

The role requires staying up to date with new technologies, evaluating its impacts and making recommendations and functioning as an individual contributor and dive deep into technical details whenever necessary.

The DevOps engineer is skillful and experienced at managing the team to ensure a healthy work culture and environment as well as provide mentorship to junior team members.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

Activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing production systems security, reliability, scalability and costs along with reporting, configuration and deployment of solutions. This responsibility includes the pre-production, test and development environments, as well as the continuous integration and deployment processes.  Is accountable for all aspects of deployment and technical operations including costs, technical project resources (partners/subcontractors or staff), scheduling, risk management, internal and external communications, and status reporting. It is expected that you will automate delivery, monitoring and reporting.
  • Tracking of infrastructure availability, performance and capacity as well as making recommendations to improve system health.
  • Proactive monitoring, logging, audits, and automated policy enforcement for security and cost compliance.
  • Manages and appropriately escalates delivery impediments, risks, issues, and changes associated with the product development initiatives.
  • Establishing standards and processes for operations that proactively prevent problems from occurring
  • Identifies technical and process improvement recommendations based on best practices and industry standards, and socialize/advocate to get them implemented
  • Evaluates technological choices by querying providers, analyzing technologies and providing evaluations of each solution that include ROI evaluations
  • Provides technical leadership and oversight of implementation and deployment planning, system integration, delivery, operations, and sustainability of technical solutions
  • Coordinates cross-functionally and with vendors in order to successfully identify, prioritize, and resolve issues and provide subject matter expertise for enhancements, developments, and operational improvements
  • Works with Program Management for estimates, timelines, project plans, and status reports.
  • Ability to deploy product and environment updates, as required, while implementing integrations when they arise.
  • Automate operational processes, as needed, with accuracy and in compliance with defined security requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Software Engineering or equivalent, relevant field experience.
  • 4-6+ years of DevOps progressive DevOps engineering experience and technical quality control processes, artifacts and tools
  • Experience migrating services from on premise to the cloud
  • Knowledge of compliance frameworks (GDPR, PCI, SOX, SOC 2 ) and the ability to apply their requirements and concepts to a complex environment
  • Delivering web applications on public clouds such as AWS and MS Azure.
  • Configuration Management and automation, and Infrastructure as Code
  • Strong experience with Microsoft infrastructure and AWS.
  • Strong experience with databases such as SQL, MS SQL, MySQL, NoSQL, Hadoop, Elasticsearch, Redis, Cassandra, and/or Mongo.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as Java, JavaScript, Perl, Ruby, Python, PHP, Groovy, Bash, Jenkins.
  • Experience with project management and workflow tools such as Agile, Jira, WorkFront, Scrum/Kanban/SAFe, etc.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain protocol and processes with team and management.
  • Experience in developing, automating and maintaining CI/CD process for highly scalable, highly available cloud-based or on-premise applications.   
  • Ideally you will also have:
  • Expert technical understanding of the intersection of development and operations (DevOps), monitoring and management tools, and deployment processes and tools
  • Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of developers, product owners, and subject matter experts. 
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, relationship building skills, and ability to achieve results without direct reporting relationships
  • Ability to drive to big picture goals and milestones while valuing and maintaining a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to quickly identify and drive to the optimal solution when presented with a series of constraints

  • Experience with side projects where you’ve learned to apply new technologies, frameworks or programming languages
