The Specialty & Durables R&D Director is critical to delivering the growth of the Specialty and Durables businesses by driving execution of short and mid term development projects, working cross-functionally to align on the long range strategy, and delivering on product re-engineering projects to maintain an industry leadership position.
To be successful, the Director must drive technical mastery, leverage our technical talent, and encourage an innovative culture consistent with our values. The role will interface with marketing, manufacturing, global technical teams, suppliers, customers,and end users. The role is also a key resource and thought partner for the VP of R&D for North America and will lead key initiatives for the function. Results are delivered by having a broad base of technical process and product development experiences; statistical data analysis skills; Lean principle and problem solving skills; voice-of-customer experience; creativity; and the ability to collaborate and influence across boundaries.
The Specialty & Durables R&D Director will lead a team of product development scientists, engineers and project managers and will also oversee responsibility for the Pilot Facility and Laboratories in Mentor Innovation Center that are based in the Mentor, Ohio location as well.
In this role as Specialty & Durables R&D Director, delivering on these responsibilities is critical to success:
Strategy Development - Partner with Marketing and Product Management develop the strategy for the Specialty and Durables businesses, and create and execute product roadmaps aligned to the strategy.
Drive continuous improve in our development process in Specialty and Durables to make it more nimble and faster by working with our manufacturing sites and understanding risk versus rewards, in order to improve our speed to market and respond to customers quickly.
Provide strategic direction and execution for the Pilot Facility and Laboratories in Mentor Innovation Center.
Work with technology development teams to ensure timely technology deployment in the region.
Use business trends and customer needs to create actionable goals that create competitive advantage.
Prioritize and allocate resource needs to align with the business needs in both the short and long term, achieving a balance between product growth, re-engineering, business continuity and quality initiatives. Ensure project execution to achieve performance targets while meeting timing and budget constraints.
Organization Development - Develop a team of engineers and scientists to deliver on the business goals, and build future leaders through thoughtful succession planning. Includes mentoring, knowledge sharing and coaching in areas including product development, project management, data analysis, scientific rigor, and intellectual property management.
Perform management duties, exercising usual authority concerning staff, performance appraisals, promotions and terminations. Ensuring safe and consistent work practices among the team.
Project Leadership - Provide oversight of complex and sometimes global projects.
Ph.D degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or related field required.
10+ years industry experience.
7+ years experience and proven track record with leading and developing talent
Demonstrated proven commercial and technical successes from your work.
Experience in global R&D strategic development and execution is a plus
Project leadership experience required.
Strong scientific and engineering knowledge.
Strong analytical skills.
Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, ELS or related experience.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Strong organization and attention to detail.
