Job Description

TITLE:  Groundskeeper I / Maintenance Worker

REPORTS DAILY TO:  District Groundskeeper II

JOB GOAL:  Support and sustain the District’s Grounds Maintenance program.  Maintain the grounds and athletic fields at all district sites to a high standard of appearance and function.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.            Work under the daily supervision of the Groundskeeper II or District Maintenance Supervisor.

2.            Have regular good attendance at work.

3.            Perform grounds maintenance activities as assigned or by following an established work schedule.

4.            Maintain a safe and clean working environment while working at building sites, around students, and in shop and storage areas.

5.            Maintain the State of Kansas Commercial Pesticide and Herbicide Applicator Certification. Document the application and quantities used of all pesticides and herbicides.  Ensure that applications are only made by following strict safety and application procedures. 

6.            Ensure that all assigned vehicles, machinery, equipment, tools, and supplies are accounted for, secured, and used correctly.

7.            Maintain all assigned vehicles, machinery, equipment, tools, and supplies as prescribed by Maintenance Supervisor, maintenance publications and preventive maintenance schedules.

8.            Periodically perform manual digging and manual labor using hand tools.

9.            Perform the activities of: field and lawn mowing; playground equipment maintenance; playground surface maintenance; trash pick up and collection; snow removal and sand application; and parking lot maintenance.

10.         Maintain district fences and gates, keeping grass and weeds from growing in fence, and repair fences as needed.

11.         Inspect playground equipment as directed.

12.         Maintain and mark district athletic fields for scheduled practices and games.

13.         Move district equipment and furniture between buildings as assigned.

14.         Trim and prune trees on district property.

15.         Prevent and repair soil erosion as needed.

16.         Perform all other job related and maintenance duties as directed by Groundskeeper II or District Maintenance Supervisor.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:  8 hours/day, 12 months/year (benefits-eligible) 

SALARY:  $12.00/hour

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Groundskeeper II, jointly with the District Maintenance Supervisor, and reported at a minimum of annually.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.            High School Diploma or equivalent.

2.            Successful completion of a course of study in Turf management, Horticultural Science, Arborist studies, Grounds Maintenance or an equivalent combination of documented experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

3.            Documented basic knowledge of standard practices in the care of trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses.

4.            Documented working knowledge of one or more of the District’s maintenance trades such as: carpentry, plumbing, painting, or electrical.

5.            Be able to efficiently read, thoroughly understand, and appropriately apply technical information in equipment and facilities maintenance manuals, technical bulletins, blue prints, and associated grounds keeping literature.

6.            Possess or have ability to obtain the State of Kansas Commercial Pesticide and Herbicide Applicator Certification.

7.            Ability to successfully follow directions and to get a long with others.

8.            Documented ability to drive and operate the following: medium to large trucks up to 35 GVW; tractors up to seventy horse power; mowers up to self-propelled 30 horse power; standard skid-steer; and a variety of standard farm, lawn, and turf management equipment.

9.            Knowledge and ability to care for and maintain the machines, equipment, and hand tools used in the ground maintenance duties.

10.         Display initiative and tact while utilizing time and performing skills efficiently.

11.         Ability to maintain safe equipment and safe work practices.

12.         Holds a valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or have ability to obtain.

13.         Such alternatives to the above qualifications that are determined to be appropriate and acceptable for the job essential functions.

14.         Be able to perform all essential duties of the job description and meet all physical requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS:

1.         Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.  The amount and kind of          climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.

2.         Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.  The amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

3.         Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist,      requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

4.         Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

5.         Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

6.         Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

7.         Reaching:  Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

8.         Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.

9.         Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long      distances and for sustained periods of time.  

10.       Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

11.       Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or pull  objects in a sustained motion.

12.       Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.  Lifting requires the substantial use of the upper            extremities and back muscles.

13.       Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing/keyboarding or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handing.

14.       Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.

15.       Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

16.       Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.

17.       Hearing: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and ability to be aware of environmental sounds.

18.       Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/ or fingers.

19.       Very heavy work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

20.       Mobile Equipment Operator: Operate cars, trucks, tractors, graders, mowers, high lift equipment, and machinery.

21.       The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions in all seasons: No effective protection from weather other than garments worn.

22.       The worker is subject to extreme cold: Temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

23.       The worker is subject to extreme heat.  Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

24.       The worker is subject to noise:  There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.

25.       The worker is subject to vibration:  Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.

26.      The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

27.       The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions:  One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: Fumes odors, dusts, mists,            gases or poor ventilation.

28.       The worker may be required to wear a respirator and/or other safety equipment under certain operations.
