Job Description

Who You’ll Work With

You’ll be a core member of the Extensible Operating System (EOS) team in Sydney, a fast-paced, high-calibre global team building the software that runs the world's largest data centre networks. Our team is responsible for all aspects of developing and delivering the foundational networking features that run on all of Arista's switching products.

You will work with your fellow engineers and members of the marketing team to gather and understand the functional and technical requirements for upcoming projects. You will help write functional specifications, design specifications, test plans, and the code to bring all of these to life. You will also work with customers to triage and fix problems in their networks. Internally, you will develop automated tests for your software, monitor the execution of those tests, and triage and fix problems found by your tests.

At Arista, you will own your projects from definition to deployment, making a direct impact on our customers and the quality of everything you deliver.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect and Develop: Design and develop innovative networking features in C/C++ and Python for Arista's unique, Linux-based EOS.

  • Collaborate: Work closely with product management, customers, and fellow engineers to define functional requirements and technical designs for new EOS capabilities.

  • Own Quality: Take full ownership of your work by writing functional specifications, design documents, test plans, and the automated tests needed to ensure robust, high-quality code.

  • Lead and Mentor: Provide technical leadership, contribute to code reviews, and mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of high-quality engineering.

  • Customer Engagement: Work directly with Customer Support Engineers to triage, debug, and resolve complex issues found in customer networks.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering (BSc, MS, or PhD).

  • Strong, demonstrable software development experience in C/C++ and/or Python.

  • Solid experience with software development in a UNIX/Linux environment.

  • A strong interest in computer networking technologies.

  • Applied understanding of software engineering principles.

Preferred:

  • Deep understanding of L2/L3 networking protocols (e.g., BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, Spanning Tree, LACP).

  • Hands-on experience in the design and development of ethernet bridging or routing related software or distributed systems software is desirable.

  • Hands-on experience with enterprise or service provider class Ethernet switch/router system software development, or significant PhD level research in the area of network routing and packet forwarding.

  • Familiarity with infrastructure functions related to distributed systems such as messaging, signalling, databases, and command line interface techniques.

Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective communication and collaboration in cross-disciplinary teams.

  • Self-motivated with a strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.

  • Ability to design a solution and implement features independently.
