Job Description
Apex is seeking an experienced leader to manage our GIS team, fostering a motivated, accountable and collaborative culture for the team while focusing on providing accurate and timely deliverables to both internal and external customers. The GIS team supports many stakeholders within Apex, from project initiation through construction, and across technologies. Responsibilities of the GIS team include providing exhibits, creating buildable areas, maintaining spatial platforms and coordinating with other departments to define project setbacks.
Successful applicants will have a deep understanding of GIS work products and applications and have managed a GIS team previously. Additionally, excellent communication, project management, and problem-solving skills are required. This position will report to the VP of Project Design.

Primary Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Accountability
- Set clear expectations and hold team members accountable for performance and quality.
- Provide timely, direct, and constructive feedback to team members to support professional growth and continuous improvement.
- Mentor and guide team members on how to prioritize work, balance competing demands, and meet deadlines.
- Enforce a culture of data integrity, consistent process, proactivity, and scope ownership.
- Process Optimization & Standardization
- Establish and enforce consistent standards for GIS deliverables, documentation, and workflows.
- Standardize a QA/QC process for GIS deliverables
- Lead efforts to streamline GIS operations in collaboration with other departments.
- Cross-Department Collaboration
- Work with stakeholders from across the organization to align GIS deliverables with business needs and strategic goals.

- Act as a liaison between the GIS team and other departments to improve data access, communication, and decision-making.
- Customer Focus & Communication
- Ensure the GIS team is responsive to internal and external customer needs, providing accurate and timely deliverables.
- Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences, translating GIS concepts into business-relevant language.
- Build and maintain confidence in the accuracy and reliability of GIS data products.
- Project & Workflow Management
- Maintain organized tracking systems for project status, team workload, and deadlines.
- Monitor key performance indicators to assess team efficiency and quality of deliverables.
- Support the implementation of tools and systems that improve team performance and visibility.
Qualifications
Success Profile
To succeed as a GIS Team Lead at Apex Clean Energy, you’ll need to excel within the following criteria:
- Education: Degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in GIS, including 2+ years in a supervisory or management role.
- Skills:
- Proven ability to lead technical teams and deliver high-quality spatial data products
- Strong preference for previous Renewable Energy Development experience
- Strong preference for permitting/regulatory knowledge
- Extensive professional use of relevant software including Esri suite, SQL databases, Python, or other geospatial tools
- Ability to drive trust and confidence in data and team outputs
- Excellent relationship management, mentorship, and communication skills
- Experience working cross-functionally with stakeholders from different departments
- Proficiency in project management tools (e.g., Smartsheet, OneNote)
- Excellent leadership and team-building skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

Work Environment:
Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit.
