Job Description

The managing editor of news leads our reporting, home page, politics, business and news teams in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Calgary. This journalist has experience in digital news and national affairs, and is adept at both directing teams during daily/breaking news and executing big projects with creativity and clarity.

Reporting to the editor-in-chief, the ME manages and mentors a highly driven, hard-working collaborative team; upholds journalistic and style standards; and helps shape the editorial vision of HuffPost Canada.

  • Work with reporting staff on daily stories and features in business, politics and national news including assigning and editing

  • Oversee and mentor staff in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary

  • Plan and execute editorial calendars and long-term projects

  • Publish stories through our content management system and social platforms

  • Monitor growth and performance against determined metrics

  • Develop online, mobile, and social media strategies to grow audience

  • Target best-in-class SEO techniques

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience working with news and politics in digital, 4 years direct digital publishing experience preferred, including use of content management systems, knowledgeable in online editing and workflow, SEO concepts, social media growth and promotion

  • Experience in leading small- to medium-sized teams in the digital environment, including hands-on daily publishing and executing longer term strategy and projects

  • Deep knowledge of CP style and editorial standards

  • Experience mentoring staff and ability to foster an open, positive team culture

  • Expert knowledge of Canadian politics and national affairs (basically lives and breathes news from scandal to policy to major issues across Canada)

  • Proven ability to write and edit breaking, viral and curated stories for a digital audience

  • Ability to analyze traffic data, track metrics and respond to them

  • Understanding of video, HTML, Photoshop
