Job Description

The Huffington Post UK is looking for a politics news reporter to boost our current affairs coverage, as part of our mission to take journalism beyond the usual left/right coverage and focus on issues that really matter to our readers.

You’ll play a crucial role in running the politics news desk, maintaining a live news list and owning the process of linking the politics team with the news and homepage editors to promote the best daily political content. The successful candidate will help plan coverage around daily, weekly and monthly events, working closely with the news desk, including taking part in the daily news meetings.

Crucially, you will have extensive reporting experience in breaking stories and exclusives and have a record of bringing stories to life with flair, intelligence and imagination. You’ll will be able to articulate the bigger picture, yet capable of tackling the detail, as well picking up breaking news spotting quirky or offbeat stories that others miss.

You will know how to make stories go viral, write brilliant headlines and use all types of content, including video, to tell the most important stories in the most timely and compelling way. The successful candidate will understand how the social web is redefining news in a digital age, while not losing sight of the enduring value of telling stories with the highest standards of rigour and insight.

The role will play a part in shaping our political social media presence and be able to act on analytics and internal reporting, including understanding traffic targets to help grow audiences and engagement both on and off site.

The Huffington Post has a genuinely global reach far beyond most traditional news organisations, all the time breaking new ground from winning the first online Pulitzer Prizes to leading the way with 'What's Working' solutions-based journalism. We pride ourselves on playing away from the pack and getting behind the headlines, as well as making them. From the Duchess of Cambridge guest-editing our special issue on children's mental health, to our coverage of what's really going on in Westminster and beyond, HuffPost UK is unafraid of doing things differently.
