Job Description
The purpose of the Senior Mining Engineer is to lead and deliver integrated mining technical services across LoM planning, 3MRS, studies and Resource & Reserve reporting, ensuring accurate, optimised and execution-ready mining outputs aligned to the integrated business plan. The role is responsible for integrating mining plans developed in Deswik with project execution schedules, ensuring alignment between mine planning activities, care and maintenance requirements, asset preservation strategies and project delivery objectives.
The role is accountable for mining technical inputs into studies, project optimisation and value engineering, ensuring alignment between geological, operational and project planning requirements. The role ensures that mining activities, project work packages, preservation activities and operational readiness requirements are fully integrated within the overall execution schedule.
Typical Tasks
Safety, Legal Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure all mining planning activities comply with safety and regulatory standards.
Identify and manage technical risks related to mining plans and assumptions.
Ensure alignment with mine safety, planning and operational requirements.
Maintain adherence to governance and reporting frameworks.
LoM Planning & Mining Technical Integration
Develop and maintain integrated Life of Mine plans, production schedules, mining sequences and development strategies using Deswik.
Ensure alignment between mining plans, project scope, preservation requirements and future operational objectives.
Translate strategic objectives into practical and executable mining plans and schedules.
Integrate mine plans with project execution schedules to ensure alignment of critical activities, milestones and resource requirements.
Structure mine planning outputs to support integration into Primavera P6 and other project scheduling systems.
Support the integration of mining, engineering, construction and operational readiness requirements into a single execution framework.
Project Planning & Schedule Integration
Develop and maintain integrated schedules combining mining activities, care and maintenance requirements, preservation activities and project execution work.
Convert Deswik mine plans into project execution schedules and work packages suitable for implementation and progress tracking.
Coordinate schedule interfaces between mining, engineering, construction, commissioning and operational readiness functions.
Support development and maintenance of integrated project schedules within Primavera P6 or equivalent project scheduling systems.
Monitor schedule performance and identify potential impacts arising from mining constraints, access limitations, preservation requirements or project changes.
Support critical path analysis, schedule risk assessments and recovery planning initiatives.
Collaborate with Project Controls teams to ensure schedule quality, forecasting accuracy and alignment with business delivery objectives.
3MRS & Development Planning
Lead development and coordination of 3MRS planning activities and outputs.
Align development priorities with Life of Mine strategy, project requirements and operational readiness plans.
Ensure integration of development schedules with infrastructure, preservation and project execution plans.
Evaluate alternative mining and project sequencing scenarios to maximise value and operational flexibility.
Support optimisation of development strategies to improve execution efficiency and project outcomes.
Studies & Technical Inputs
Provide mining technical inputs into concept, pre-feasibility, feasibility, execution and operational readiness studies.
Provide technical support to care and maintenance programmes, preservation initiatives and future restart planning activities.
Ensure mining assumptions, constraints and planning parameters are accurately reflected within studies and project documentation.
Undertake trade-off studies, scenario evaluations and mining optimisation analyses.
Develop planning assumptions, productivity models and execution strategies to support project evaluations and investment decisions.
Align study outputs with operational feasibility, execution requirements and business objectives.
Resource & Reserve Reporting
Coordinate and ensure accurate Resource and Reserve reporting.
Align mining plans and schedules with declared Resource and Reserve positions.
Ensure compliance with reporting standards, governance requirements and technical assurance processes.
Integrate geological, survey, geotechnical and planning inputs into reporting outputs.
Support reporting requirements associated with studies, project planning and business planning processes.
Project Optimisation & Value Engineering
Identify and drive optimisation opportunities across mining plans and project scope.
Challenge assumptions related to mining methods, sequencing and productivity.
Contribute to value engineering initiatives across studies and project phases.
Support capital efficiency and lifecycle value optimization.
Technical Assurance & Decision Support
Provide technical assurance on mining plans, schedules and study outputs.
Ensure accuracy, completeness and quality of mining deliverables.
Support preparation of decision-ready outputs for planning and project teams.
Clearly articulate mining risks, constraints and assumptions.
Stakeholder & Interface Management
Act as the primary mining interface between technical services, project controls, engineering, operations and project teams.
Lead multidisciplinary planning initiatives involving mining, engineering, geology, geotechnical, survey, preservation and project stakeholders.
Coordinate consultant and contractor activities to ensure delivery of planning, study and project requirements.
Facilitate integrated planning workshops and technical review sessions.
Influence stakeholders to achieve alignment on technical solutions, priorities, schedules and project objectives.
Coordinate inputs across multiple functions where no direct reporting relationship exists.
Drive accountability for mining-related deliverables through effective stakeholder engagement and technical leadership.
Qualifications
Grade 12 / Equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.
Degree in Mining Engineering.
Professional registration (advantageous).
Valid driver’s licence.
Experience & Knowledge required:
8-15 years' experience in mining technical services, mine planning, studies and project environments.
Demonstrated experience in Life of Mine planning, mine scheduling and mining optimisation.
Experience integrating mining plans with project execution schedules.
Experience within care and maintenance, brownfield project, operational readiness or asset preservation environments.
Demonstrated experience supporting project studies, project execution and capital projects.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary stakeholders, consultants and contractors without direct reporting authority.
Experience in underground mining operations and technical project environments.
Proven experience in:
3MRS, studies and technical project environments.
Resource and Reserve reporting and integration.
Strong working knowledge of:
Deswik planning and scheduling systems.
Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project.
Mining planning methodologies and operational constraints.
Project Controls principles and schedule management practices.
Care and maintenance strategies and asset preservation principles.
Mining project development and stage-gate delivery processes.
Resource and Reserve reporting requirements and governance frameworks.
