Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.
Job Description
Reporting to the relevant Legal Manager, as a Legal Specialist, you will act in a legal counsel capacity, partnering closely with operational, procurement, commercial teams and other business stakeholders to provide practical, high-quality, commercially focused legal advice that facilitates business outcomes while managing risk effectively. You'll play a key role in supporting supply chain and procurement matters, commercial transactions, governance activities, and other strategic initiatives across our Steelmaking Coal business.
Key accountabilities also include:
- Providing timely and pragmatic legal advice across procurement, supply chain, operations, infrastructure, governance and strategic projects.
- Drafting, negotiating and advising on a broad range of commercial agreements and transactions.
- Partnering with business stakeholders to identify, assess and manage legal risk while supporting commercial objectives.
- Supporting governance and regulatory compliance activities, including company secretarial and joint venture matters.
- Managing external legal advisors to ensure quality outcomes and value for money.
- Developing practical legal solutions and enhancing existing systems and processes to strengthen business capability and risk management.
Qualifications
We're seeking a capable, self-motivated lawyer who combines strong technical legal capability with commercial acumen and a collaborative approach, and who enjoys working as part of a small in-house legal team with access to experienced senior lawyers.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a current Australian practising certificate.
- At least 5 years' post-admission experience gained within a reputable law firm, corporate legal team, or a combination of both, with the capability to operate at legal counsel level in an in-house environment.
- Strong experience in commercial contracting, procurement, corporate and commercial law.
- Excellent communication, drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management skills, with strong attention to detail.
- The ability to provide pragmatic, risk-based advice in a complex and fast-paced business environment.
- Sound judgement to work autonomously, prioritise competing matters and know when to escalate issues for guidance or approval.
- A proactive and solutions-focused mindset, with the confidence to build trusted relationships and contribute to practical business outcomes.
