De Beers Group (DBG) is a 135-year-old rough diamond mining, sorting and selling organisation. Our strategy, ‘Origins’, is designed to help us transform our business, from mining through to retail, for the long term and create sustainable value for all our stakeholders. Within DBG the Midstream sells and distributes rough diamonds via term contracts to Sightholders’ as well as in country selling businesses. The Midstream is poised to enhance De Beers’ market position by; underpinning Sightholder sales model through new contracts, leveraging Tracr to track diamonds from country of origin to polished and jewellery sales and reducing rough diamond inventory through production cuts and new sales.
Job Description
Your role will include but not limited to:
- Provide clear, visible and professional management to support a high-performance culture that drives continual improvement in order to achieve the quality standards set by De Beers.
- Support and provide input to the development of standards and measures and oversee the implementation to ensure consistency across the Midstream
- Interface with Partner Diamond Trading Company’s (PDTC) Operations Managers to understand their needs and mobilise Global Sightholder Sales (GSS) to address the issues where appropriate
- Interface with Product Manager in order to evaluate cost of creating non-standard products and most effective way to deliver.
- Promote, develop and manage effective partnerships working with internal and external stakeholders in order to maintain product consistency.
- Apply a ‘market price’ (final selling price) to all Large Stones (+10.8¢ and above) and Fancy Colour productions globally.
- Provide ultimate operational oversight and direction for all technical valuation activities (RtoP) utilised within all Special Stones departments.
- Promote, develop and manage effective partnerships working with internal and external stakeholders in order to maintain product consistency.
- Ensure delivery of a full technical valuation for all appropriate DBGSS Special stones prior to Sale (through the valuation activities of all Special Stones departments).
- Initiate and produce the +2ct component of the De Beers Group polished price book, which provides up to date pricing data for the valuation of all rough production intakes (including but not limited to the Large Stones and Fancy Colours).
- Review composition and collective price positioning of all Special Stone Sight box content (post allocation), apply market premiums where required.
- Interact with DBGSS global Sales Teams and customers (Sightholders) offering support on technical and pricing queries or concerns.
- Make the stone selection for the GSS Exceptional stones allocation, (prior to Sign off by the Executive Vice President.
- Identify the best items to be allocated to DBAS, to maximise potential upside for the De Beers Group.
- Investigate, analyse and implement applications of new technologies where appropriate to further enhance full value realisation of all Special Stone intakes.
SHE, Risk Management and Business Integrity
- Ensure corporate governance requirements in technical, assurance, occupational health and safety, and environment are in place for projects and all staff (contract and permanent), and that equipment complies with governance, safety, and security standards and policies.
- Liaise with relevant management functions to ensure all relevant governance and assurance protocols are observed.
- Ensure timely and appropriate incident reporting, management and investigation and implement required remedial action to maintain and restore standards.
- Implement and participate in SHE campaigns as scheduled.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant technical discipline, e.g. Business Management or proven track record of extensive practical experience in a role and context of similar complexity
Experience
- Deep experience with expert knowledge of pricing factors, including polished sales trends, recent auction prices, specific market intelligence and manufacturing knowledge
- Long term exposure to the rough wholesale markets and buying behaviours (the likes and dislikes of key markets and major players per location).
- Extensive knowledge, experience and understanding of delivering high quality and cost-effective business improvement programmes to senior executives
- Display comfort in producing, interpreting and delivering financial information e.g. in respect of the financial impact of business improvement programmes
- Understanding and managing the dynamics between the technical, commercial and social aspects of the product with the ability to translate strategy into operations
Knowledge and Skills
Long term exposure to rough wholesale markets and buying behaviours.
Understanding of diamond characteristics potential impact on value, appeal and saleability of a rough stone (e.g. individual mine source traits, and impact of graining and fluorescence on anticipated polished outcomes).
Advanced understanding of current diamond manufacturing processes, techniques and rationale.
Knowledge of current consumer and polished wholesale market trends.
Understanding of diamond characteristics and impact on value.
Established and appropriate market contacts, confidence in the ability to source credible market pricing data, and the knowledge to interrogate the accuracy of the price feedback.
Rough diamond market knowledge and exposure.
Analytical skills.
Advanced understanding of current diamond manufacturing processes, techniques and rationale.
Knowledge of current consumer and polished wholesale market trends.
Market Credibility.
In depth knowledge of each stone to be allocated, coupled with the specific customers preferences.
Awareness of which stones present a high level of speculative appeal, i.e. items which may perform beyond ‘normal’ expectations on the DBAS Auction platform (and potentially beyond the defined ‘placed sales’ price).
Knowledge of all current and potentially applicable future technologies in development, which may have an impact on the manufacture of Rough diamonds.
