Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.  In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

Job Description

As a Financial Accountant within the Corporate Office Accounting team, you will be responsible for preparing timely, accurate and compliant financial accounting information to support the Steelmaking Coal business unit.
With a strong focus on delivering a month end result, the role is integral in providing financial accounting services to the mine site operation. The role’s responsibilities include:

  • Coal sales accounting including revenue, purchases, despatch and demurrage
  • Sundry accounts receivable invoicing
  • Preparing coal stock valuations, provision for stock obsolescence and diesel fuel rebate calculations
  • Calculating accruals for royalties, levies, management fees and port and rail
  • Preparing standard monthly journals including prepayments, leases, fringe benefits tax and payroll tax
  • Maintaining the SAP fixed asset registers
  • Preparing joint venture reports and responding to joint venture partners queries and information requests
  • Ensuring the integrity of the ledgers by preparing balance sheet reconciliations and investigating and rectifying issues identified
  • Adhering to accounting standards and internal policies and procedures
  • Preparing regulatory returns including Notional Business Activity Statement
  • Preparing statutory note disclosures and support schedules for interim and year end reporting
  • Preparing annual financial statements and solvency statements

The role will work collaboratively with others to achieve department objectives and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A degree in Accounting/Commerce
  • CPA or CA certified
  • SAP experience will be highly regarded
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Exceptional time management skills
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to show initiative and work in a team
  • Proven ability to remain effective and resilient in a dynamic environment
