Company Description

Grosvenor Mine – an underground steelmaking coal mine produced its first longwall coal in May 2016 and is located in Moranbah, about 190 km south-west of Mackay.

We are building the team to deliver the next chapter of Grosvenor Mine. With a planned return to longwall production by Q4 2027, this is a unique opportunity to contribute to a major mine restart and help shape the future of underground mining.

Working alongside experienced professionals, you will play a role in implementing leading-edge technology, automation, monitoring systems and operational improvements that will define how the mine operates for years to come.

Job Description

As the Safety and Health Manager, you will be a key member of the Grosvenor Mine Senior Leadership Team, responsible for shaping and embedding a high-performance safety culture across one of Australia's most technically complex underground mining operations.

Leading the site's Safety and Health function, you will partner closely with operational leaders to drive continuous improvement in risk management, critical control effectiveness, compliance, and safety leadership. Through visible leadership, strategic influence, risk control systems and expert technical guidance, you will ensure safety and health considerations are integrated into every aspect of the operation.

This role is key in the overall management of the safety and health function for the Grosvenor mine, providing timely guidance and service to key stakeholders.

  • Providing strategic leadership and direction for the Safety and Health function across Grosvenor Mine. Visibly lead by example and set clear, consistent expectations, including consistent use of systems, symbols and behaviours aligned to Anglo American values
  • Driving the design, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the site's Safety and Health Management System
  • Partnering with operational leaders to strengthen risk management practices, safe work design, and critical control verification
  • Coaching and influencing leaders at all levels to develop safety leadership capability and foster a culture of accountability and care Manage all aspects of workers health and hygiene (including dust, diesel particulate and polymetric chemicals) in accordance with legislative requirements and recognised standards
  • Providing expert advice regarding Queensland mining legislation, regulatory requirements, investigations, and industry best practice
  • Leading the development and execution of site safety improvement initiatives and strategic programs
  • Developing, managing, and optimising Safety and Health operating and capital budgets
  • Building strong relationships with regulators, workforce representatives, and industry stakeholders
  • Championing Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) and ensuring Anglo American's values and behaviours are consistently demonstrated across the operation
  • Identifying opportunities to improve safety and health performance through innovation, data-driven decision making, and operational excellence.

Qualifications

We are seeking an accomplished safety leader who combines deep technical expertise with the ability to influence, challenge and inspire at a senior leadership level.

You will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, Health Sciences, Engineering, Mining or a related discipline
  • Extensive experience leading Safety and Health functions ideally within the mining industry
  • Demonstrated success operating as a senior leader within a complex operational environment, ideally within underground coal mining
  • Strong working knowledge of Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health legislation and associated regulatory frameworks
  • Proven capability influencing senior operational leaders and driving positive safety culture and performance outcomes
  • A track record of leading risk management, critical control management, incident investigation, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills with experience working alongside regulators, workforce representatives, and executive leadership teams
  • Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into practical, sustainable safety improvements that deliver measurable outcomes
  • An undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours degree or equivalent) plus a formal qualification in Safety or Health combined with practical safety experience with extensive years at a managerial level
  • Return to Work Coordinator (WorkCover) qualifications are highly desirable
  • S1/S2/S3
  • G2- Facilitating Risk Management (essential)
  • G3 – Establish the Risk Management System (essential)
  • G7 – Establish and Maintain the site Safety and Health Management System (desirable)
  • Investigation qualifications.
