Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.  In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and values-driven Ventilation Officer to join our Aquila team. In this critical statutory role, you will be responsible for managing mine ventilation and gas systems to ensure a safe, efficient, and high-performing underground operation.

This role provides expert technical advice, supports short- and medium-term planning, and ensures best-practice ventilation and gas management systems are in place to optimise safety and production outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Champion a strong safety culture, conduct inspections and audits, ensure incidents are effectively managed, and maintain compliance with legislation and site standards.
  • Fulfil statutory Ventilation Officer responsibilities, overseeing mine ventilation and gas systems to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Provide expert ventilation and gas management advice to the Mine Manager to support operational performance and mine optimisation.
  • Develop and communicate ventilation and gas management plans aligned with short-, medium-, and long-term mine planning.
  • Conduct gas monitoring (including bag sampling), track system performance, and recommend improvements.
  • Monitor system performance and recommend improvements to optimise safety and efficiency.
  • Work closely with operations, contractors, and stakeholders to deliver team objectives and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance safety, productivity, and system performance through innovation and technology.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) or relevant Coal Industry qualifications/experience 
  • Formal qualifications as a Ventilation Officer Certificate of Competency (QLD)
  • Current Practising Certificate
  • Extensive demonstrated experience in an underground coal mining operation as well as specialist knowledge in ventilation.
  • Ability to develop innovative solutions to complex problems, and a continuous improvement mindset
  • Ability to influence and build relationships across site and technical experts in our Corporate office
  • A strong background in ensuring hazard identification and risk assessment principles, coupled with the compliance of all ventilation matters relating to legislation and the site safety management system.

  • A sound knowledge of Queensland legislative requirements as well as Australian Mining & Resources sector experience
