Job Description

Job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Ensure compliance with the OHSA and other relevant regulations like the Minerals Act.
  • Identify potential hazards and risks in the work environment and take corrective measures.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor safety targets, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Key involvement in Contract Performance Management (CPM) activities.
  • Investigate any incidents, accidents, or near-misses to identify causes and recommend preventative measures.
  • Maintain detailed records of all safety-related incidents and provide reports to management and regulatory authorities.
  • Assist in the root cause analysis of incidents and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct safety induction programs for new employees and contractors on-site
  • Facilitate ongoing training for staff in areas such as emergency procedures, safe equipment handling, and personal protective equipment (PPE) use.
  • Organise safety awareness campaigns and drills, such as fire and evacuation drills.
  • Ensure that all surface equipment is in safe working condition and that necessary safety precautions are followed during operations.
  • Ensure the proper use of PPE and safety gear by all employees and visitors.
  • Act as a point of contact for emergency response and coordinate efforts in the case of an emergency on-site.
  • Develop and review emergency response plans.
  • Ensure that first-aid kits, firefighting equipment, and other emergency response tools are available and in good condition.
  • Liaise with inspectors or auditors during routine inspections and audits.
  • Ensure that all safety documents are up to date and that the site is prepared for inspections from regulatory bodies and auditors
  • Work with the committee to develop strategies for improving safety and addressing areas of concern

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with Maths or Mathematical Literacy
  • Technical Qualification (Certificate or Diploma in Safety Management or a related field)
  • SAMTRAC- desirable
  • COMSOC I & II or equivalent-Desirable

Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license code B or C1
  • OHSA and MHSA competency certificates
  • Certificate in First Aid and Firefighting
  • ITIS/Train the Trainer
  • OSHAS 18 001-desirable
  • Auditors courses for Safety and Risk Control management-Desirable
  • Risk Assessment Techniques: (SWIFT, HAZOP and FMECA)Accident investigation (ICAM/RCAT/SCAT)-Desirable

Experience

  • 3+ Years relevant Mining / Process / Engineering/ Training experience
  • Experience in a safety related role

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent understanding of safety regulations and legal requirements.
  • Strong observational and risk assessment skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for conducting training and leading safety initiatives.
  • Proficiency in report writing and incident documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Good knowledge of emergency response planning and procedures.
