The Shipping Team is a stand-alone profit centre and service provider for ocean freight services within Anglo American Marketing.

As part of its role, Shipping is the in house ocean freight service provider for the Marketing Business, services which includes, but are not limited to commercial freight provision, technical operations, safety and regulatory support and market information. Shipping leverages off the Anglo American cargo base to generate additional earnings from ocean freight activity by engaging in third party freight activity. Using global scale and strength, the team aims to optimise the marine activities and provide safe, reliable, sustainable and competitive freight to the commodity businesses, their customers and further into Shipping’s own customer base.

Job Description

This is an opportunity to join us as a Senior Chartering Specialist

Purpose

Negotiate and execute the Marketing Business Unit’s spot and short-term chartering requirements of Capesize bulk freight. Service internal iron ore marketing as well as commodity trading desk to optimise schedule and P&L and assist in developing opportunities for the company as a whole. Leverage in-house flow to generate arbitrage opportunities through spot 3rd party physical trading. Manage hedging of exposure via FFA and bunker swaps through the in-house Financial Trading Desk.

The Senior Chartering Specialist will be responsible for:

Chartering - Vessel Booking and Scheduling

  • Negotiate spot and short term to medium term chartering for Marketing BU’s dry bulk freight activities in accordance with Group policy and procedures. 
  • Responsible for daily chartering of Capesize vessels on voyage, period and TCT basis.
  • Optimise P&L through scheduling of in-house flow and fleet allocation.
  • Liaise with commodity teams and ports in in South Africa and Brazil to optimise planning.
  • Manage COA laycan and vessel nominations with Owners, BUs and the Ports.
  • Provide voyage calculations, correlation analysis and assessments of the freight market to BUs.
  • Leverage in-house cargo flow to generate arbitrage opportunities through 3rd party spot trading.
  • Oversee vessel P&L performance and provide direction to Operations and Operations Control personnel.
  • Review and approve Charter Party contracts, pre- and post-fixture.
  • Conduct and provide guidance on freight differential calculations (including discharge port and BAF).
  • Align chartering activities with monthly scheduling requirements and quarterly/ annual budget.
  • Mentor junior Chartering Specialists on negotiation and market direction.

Market Analysis

  • Closely monitor freight markets and collect market intel/analysis.
  • Provide market update and direction to Chartering, Financial Trading and Market Intelligence Teams.

Group Governance and Risk Management

  • Maintain all dry bulk cargo and vessel fixtures within the Marketing BU’s shipping system in a timely and compliant manner. Including making improvements to processes as required. 
  • Manage hedge requirement and liaise with Financial Trading Team on hedge execution and allocation.
  • Monitor risk report and take necessary actions to reduce market exposure in line with market call.

Business Development – Increasing Volumes & Projects

  • Seek and secure 3rd party cargoes to support the fleet and grow the portfolio.
  • Support BUs with short/medium term freight enquiries to develop new trade flows for the company.
  • Assist commodity traders by providing spot and forward freight rates.
  • Build and maintain a network of Owners/Charterers to support shipping activities.
  • Develop and maintain business relationships with strategic customers.
  • Key account manager for major Capesize Charterers in Brazil and West African routes.
  • Involved in deployment of LNG Dual Fuel Capesize Bulk Carriers and related projects.

Customer Service

  • Liaise and interface with the commodity teams to develop dry bulk freight plans and forecast. 
  • Support commodity team in medium – long term project freight analysis.
  • Provide shipping advice to Marketing BUs contract team on shipping clauses and commercial terms.

Qualifications

Knowledge:
The Senior Chartering Specialist role requires a solid understanding of the bulk freight market and how it interacts with relevant commodity markets. 

An understanding of the economic, commercial, technical and political issues affecting the shipping market.

  • 8+ experience in dry bulk chartering, with Capesize experience
  • Strong lateral thinker.
  • Track record of executing arbitrage opportunities.
  • Strong understanding and capability to conduct detailed freight calculations for various products and vessel types.
  • Expertise in global commodity markets and their drivers with particular relevance back to ocean freight markets.
  • Knowledge of value chain.
  • Experience/knowledge of the freight market, technical requirements and operational knowledge.
  • Knowledge of hedging and FFA concept (optional).
  • Sound knowledge of financial management.
  • Sounds knowledge of contract management.
  • Deep understanding of marketing fundamentals (i.e. pricing, delivery strategy, value chain dynamics, voyage calculations).
