Kumba Iron Ore

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As Manager Engineering you will provide services as required and your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Adherence to Professional Standards: Ensure all construction engineering activities comply with the highest professional and regulatory standards.
  • Compliance with Mine Health & Safety Act (MHSA): Fulfil the responsibilities of a 2.13.3.1 Legal Appointee and ensure adherence to the Mine Health & Safety Act to protect the health and safety of all personnel on-site.
  • Technical Expertise and Leadership: Provide expert technical guidance to direct reports and contractors, ensuring that all engineering efforts align with project objectives, regulatory requirements and quality standards.
  • Mentorship and Coaching: Mentor and coach team members to enhance their skills and performance. Conduct regular performance reviews to track progress and address any areas for improvement.
  • Promote Inclusivity: Foster a diverse and inclusive work environment, encouraging different perspectives and ideas to enhance team collaboration and innovation.
  • Continuous Improvement: Implement strategies to enhance the quality of construction, ensuring the highest standards are maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaboration with Area Construction Managers/Contractors: Work closely with Area Construction Managers/contractors to develop comprehensive construction methodologies/associated method statements and lifting and rigging plans.
  • Effective Deployment: Assist in deploying and effectively implementing these plans, ensuring all team members understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Foster strong communication and collaboration among all stakeholders, including mine management, operations teams, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
  • Regular Updates: Update project progress regularly, address concerns, and resolve issues promptly to maintain stakeholder confidence and support.
  • Data Analysis: Analyse construction data to identify trends and assess the effectiveness of construction methodologies.
  • Performance Monitoring: Monitor the performance of construction activities to ensure they meet project timelines and quality standards.
  • Optimisation: Identify opportunities to optimise operations, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in project execution.

This role is in Project and Development (P&D) at a Band 5 level reporting to the Project Director Project Koketso.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12
  • 4-year Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Government Certificate of Competency for Mines and Works- mandatory
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification - preferred
  • SA Drivers Licence

Experience

  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering principles, theories, and practices relevant to the engineer's area of specialisation (mechanical engineering or electrical engineering).
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant regulations, codes of practice, and industry standards applicable to engineering projects in South Africa.
  • Familiarity with advanced engineering concepts, methodologies, and tools used in the engineer's field of expertise.
  • Ability to analyse complex engineering problems, develop innovative solutions, and make sound engineering judgments based on technical data and analysis.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning, organising, and executing engineering projects effectively while adhering to project timelines and budget constraints
