SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Program implementation, development and monitoring

1. Oversee and manage all anaesthetic drugs and equipment used in the provision of services in the theatre, maternity and other relevant hospital departments
2. Conduct preoperative assessment of elective surgical patients in collaboration with the General Surgeon
3. Inform patients of proposed anaesthesia procedure, including the associated risks, and obtain appropriate consent.
4. Manage the anaesthesia and resuscitation component of theatre services provided in the hospital
5. Perform minor procedures (i.e. surgical toilet, incision and drainage of abscesses and primary suturing of cut wounds).
6. Provide on-the-job and theoretical training to the surgical nurses and midwives on basic ‘emergency services’ and other health issues, in collaboration with the hospital matron
7. Assist in the post-operative follow-up of patients
8. Participate in health education sessions and raising awareness events
9. Assist the hospital matron in the drug management and consumption supervision (including the timely reporting)
10. Be available to assist the matron in any hospital managerial task which may be required to ensure the smooth running of health services.

1. Program coordination

1. Provide monthly consumption reports and assist the Emergency Programme Manager in preparing orders of required essential medicines, medical consumables and equipment necessary for the uninterrupted provision of quality surgical care
2. Attend staff meetings and perform assigned tasks that promote Amref programmes.
3. Perform any other tasks that may be assigned by the Programme Manager, including tasks outside the clinical services, such as assessments, and meetings.

1. Accurate and timely collection and presentation of programme results

1. Compile monthly and quarterly data on all services provided
2. Provide monthly data on the theatre performances, according to the standard reporting  template in use.
3. Document and share human interest stories that showcase the impact of quality health services with the aim of promoting behavioural change that increases community uptake of services and improves health outcomes.

The Anaesthetist will ensure the provision of care to patients in the Operating Theatre and Critical Care Units, and to any other patients who require acute medical intervention at Kuajok State Hospital, Warrap State, South Sudan. They are expected to actively participate in the mentoring and training of junior Anesthetist and allied health care providers, take part in the general activities of the Surgeons, and support the development of innovative improvements within the department to maintain and improve the quality of patient care.

They will report to the Amref Health Africa Program Manager (Emergency Project Manager) and work with the Hospital Director, Hospital Matron/Patron, and the Surgical Team in a collaborative and proactive manner.

Minimum Requirements

1. Diploma (3-year) in Anaesthesia from a recognized higher institution of learning.
2. At least 2 years of work experience as anaesthetist in a busy hospital.
