About the role
We are seeking a Corporate Counsel to support Ampol’s Convenience Retail business, providing high-quality legal advice that enables the business to achieve its commercial objectives while effectively managing legal and regulatory risk. This role partners closely with internal stakeholders across a large and complex retail network, delivering pragmatic, solutions-focused guidance across commercial contracts, compliance, and dispute management. You will play a key role in supporting both directly operated and third-party sites, ensuring legal risks are understood, mitigated, and aligned with broader business priorities.

This is a permanent, full-time role based in our Alexandria HQ. 

Key responsibilities

  • Provide clear, commercial and timely legal advice aligned to business objectives and risk appetite 
  • Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders, understanding business plans and proactively identifying legal risks 
  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements 
  • Support the business on regulatory compliance matters, including competition, consumer and privacy laws 
  • Manage complaints, pre-litigation matters and external counsel for disputes and litigation 
  • Effectively prioritise and manage workload, balancing strategic and operational legal support 
  • Communicate key legal risks and recommendations in a practical and accessible way 
  • Contribute to the broader Group Legal function through collaboration and knowledge sharing 
  • Keep senior legal stakeholders informed of key developments, risks and workload priorities

Qualifications & Experience

  • 3-5 years’ PQE in a top or mid-tier law firm
  • Proven experience providing commercial legal advice within a corporate or retail environment 
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills across a variety of commercial agreements 
  • Sound knowledge of Australian regulatory frameworks including competition, consumer and privacy laws 
  • Experience managing disputes, including working with external counsel 
  • Ability to deliver practical, solutions-oriented advice to non-legal stakeholders 
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with a proactive and collaborative approach 
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively 
  • Commercially minded with the ability to understand and support business strategy
