Job Description
About the role:
To act faster, make better decisions, and serve customers better, our Data, Analytics & AI team leverage data analytics and artificial intelligence to drive insights and decision-making; helping us drive growth through improved operations and innovation.
The Business Data Analyst (BDA) role will drive long term enhancement of the Trading & Shipping Data & Analytics capability through effectively understanding business processes and systems supporting Ampol’s Trading & Shipping capabilities, and building up an intimate knowledge of the key datasets, data relationships and interplay between data, process and systems that Ampol’s Trading & Shipping business.
The BDA will be responsible for Business Analysis related activities for the Ampol Australia refined products trading, supply/terminal distribution (primary) scheduling (inclusive of ships, pipelines and truck logistics) and trade accounting domains.
The BDA will work closely with project specialists, business stakeholders, technical members, data and analytics specialists in the Trading & Shipping Tech team and the wider IT group to extract value from the data generated, processed and distributed across the Trading and Shipping business processes and application portfolio.
You’ll take us further by:
- Supporting the Trading & Supply/Terminal Distribution business by analysing and documenting business processes and data flows and mappings using a variety of tools
- Leading process change: Analyse and document existing processes, facilitate process mapping workshops, identify inefficiencies and propose improvements supported by analysis, and define UAT criteria
- Lead data-driven analysis: Collect, interpret and synthesize complex data sets to provide actionable insights that support decision making and add value to the business.
- Work with the Trading & Shipping Data & Analytics Product Manager and broader technical teams to effectively interrogate external datasets, enriched datasets and application datasets to inform appropriate context and suitability for strategic data, analytics and AI outcomes.
- Develop Trading & Supply/Terminal Distribution business requirements and data requirements and functional specifications documents in support of business processes and organisational requirements through effective engagement and stakeholder management.
- Partner with data engineers, analysts and scientists to define data requirements, validate data models and ensure business needs are accurately reflected in analytical solutions, dashboards and pipelines.
- Develop, document and execute test scripts for data, process and application changes and provide support to User Acceptance Testing (UAT) activities
- Create, curate and govern data definitions and metadata information relevant to the Trading & Shipping Domain
Qualifications
We’d love it if you have:
- Experience working as a Data/Business Analyst, with a track record of delivering data-driven insights, supporting business decision making, process mapping, and documentation.
- Proven expertise in working with large datasets and databases, including data interrogation, pattern recognition, and relationship analysis.
- Strong analytical and documentation skills, with the ability to clearly record, interpret, and share findings across both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Skilled in query development, report writing, and data presentation, translating analytical results into actionable business recommendations.
- In-depth knowledge of SAP ECC, particularly within the SD, MM, and FI modules, and familiarity with IS-OIL industry solutions.
- Experience working with Terminal Automation and Management Systems (TAS/TMS).
- Skilled in business process modelling using notations such as BPMN, EPC, or BPEL for documenting and optimising workflows.
- Experience in designing, developing, and maintaining comprehensive reports and visualisations to support effective data-driven decision-making.
- Understanding of Data Management principles, including Data Governance, Quality, and Security, with experience of associated tools and technologies.
- Experience/Exposure to Energy or Commodity Trading and Risk Management (ETRM/CTRM) applications
