Job Description

This is a full-time, NIGHT SHIFT position working Monday through Friday (11:00 PM - 7:30 AM) at the UniPath Central Lab in Denver, Colorado.

This position is responsible for learning and performing Histology laboratory techniques and to ensure the quality, consistency, and efficiency of operations.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assisting and training in routine histology with the ability to learn and perform each bench independently.
  • Safety - Learning and following laboratory safety requirements including hazardous waste regulations and disposal.
  • Processing – building a working knowledge of tissue fixation and processing.
  • Embedding – Embedding paraffin processed patient tissue in molds.
  • Microtomy – Producing high quality microscopic slides.
  • Quality Control – QC checking of histology slides prior to slide distribution.
  • Preparing reagents , storing, and disposing of solutions. 
  • Staining techniques – Using manual and automated methods of H&E and special stains.
  • IHC – Basic operations.
  • Participating in the OJT student training program.
  • Hands on training.
  • Maintaining training checklists and proficiency testing.
  • Engaging in Independent studies with Histology resources to correlate with training.
  • Developing working knowledge of the LIS, Vantage, tissue processors, embedding stations, microtomes, and operation of the H&E, special and IHC automated stainers.
  • Developing through training, basic troubleshooting techniques.
  • Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on laboratory equipment. 
  • Contributing to the general production of the Histology department.
  • Reviewing and acting in accordance with current policies and procedures.

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Block and slide filing.
  • Maintain integrity of patient specimens at all times, with a high level of accuracy.
  • Collaborates with others to ensure work processes and workflow meet organizational needs in accordance with established mission, vision and values.
  • Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers and provides service to team members and pathologist.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with team members, management and pathologists.
  • Resolves conflict through finding common ground and obtaining cooperation with minimum disruption. Identifies problems and provides appropriate recommendations for solutions in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a safe, clean work environment at all times (includes equipment, supply stock, files, records, counters, etc.) according to standards established by department management.
  • Helps prepare for accreditation inspections.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Duties:

  • No supervisory duties.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • High School or Equivalent.
  • College biology educational track with completion of 30 hours of science credit and completion of a college level human anatomy and physiology course.
  • Prefer one year of experience in a medical laboratory. 
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities and teleconferences.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of biology, anatomy, and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of handling chemicals and bio-hazardous materials.
  • Skill in communicating and collaborating both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in effectively working at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to effectively problem solve issues.
  • Ability to work independently or in small or large groups.
  • Ability to maintain the necessary levels of confidentiality to protect client’s privacy (as established by HIPAA) and proprietary organizational information.
  • Ability to perform and adhere to scheduled competency examinations.
  • Ability to maintain mental and physical focus required to perform tasks to established standards and deadlines (quality and quantity).  
  • Ability to learn new techniques and to adhere to scheduled competency examinations. 

Work Environment

  • Laboratory environment
  • Employees will receive safety training and handling and disposal of chemicals and bio-hazards, clean-up of spills, emergency evacuation routes, communication, and alarms. 
  • Exposures to common Histology Laboratory environment-unpleasant odors and commonly used solvents, i.e.; Xylene, alcohols, Formalin and other chemicals commonly used in Histology Laboratories.
  •  Handling of hazardous waste materials.
  • Ability to tolerate appropriate use of personal protective equipment. 
  • High pressure to meet deadlines impacting turn-around-time and managing issues.

Physical Activities: 

  • Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity.
  •  Requires eye/hand coordination.
  •  Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
  •  Requires moderate physical activity and the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  •  Requires ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
