Job Description

Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Assistant General Manager plays a critical leadership role within a high‑volume metals recycling and processing environment. This position supports and drives the day‑to‑day operational performance of the yard, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations across all production, logistics, and quality functions.

You will help maintain strict adherence to industry regulations, including environmental, state, and federal requirements, while promoting a safety‑first culture aligned with American Iron & Metal’s policies and sustainability commitments. Further, you will work alongside leadership to streamline processes, support continuous improvement, and drive the profitability and long‑term growth of the operation.

 

What You’re Responsible For

Operational Leadership & Productivity

  • Assisting in achieving yard, production, and processing goals by executing operational plans that align with company strategy.
  • Coordinating daily workflow across receiving, processing, shipping, and equipment operation to ensure maximum throughput and minimum downtime.
  • Ensuring all employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks, and provide hands‑on support to keep operations flowing.

Team Leadership, Coaching & Culture

  • Communicating operational priorities clearly to supervisors, operators, and support teams; ensure alignment between shifts and departments.
  • Providing coaching, performance feedback, and mentorship to employees at all levels, helping develop strong, capable teams.
  • Addressing concerns, resolve operational conflicts, and maintain a positive, productive work environment.

Quality, Compliance & Safety

  • Upholding strict quality control standards for incoming materials, processed metals, and outbound shipments.
  • Ensuring compliance with all state, federal, and environmental regulations, as well as company EHS and sustainability policies.
  • Collaborating with EHS and HR on incident reporting, investigations, corrective actions, and disciplinary measures when necessary.

Operational Planning & Reporting

  • Supporting scheduling, resource planning, and equipment allocation to meet production needs and reduce bottlenecks.
  • Assisting in maintaining accurate timekeeping and personnel records in collaboration with HR and EHS teams.
  • Preparing, reviewing, and submitting operational and performance reports, identifying areas for process optimization.

Communication & Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Serving as a bridge between frontline employees and upper management—ensuring transparent, timely communication in both directions.
  • Working closely with maintenance, logistics, scale staff, and management to support reliability, equipment readiness, and efficient yard flow.

Qualifications

What You Bring

  • Proven experience as a leader in a heavy‑industrial, metals, recycling, or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of metal recycling processes, yard operations, or related industrial workflows.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and support diverse teams.
  • Exceptional organizational and leadership abilities; able to prioritize, problem‑solve, and manage multiple operational demands.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and comfort working with operational reporting tools.
