Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The ClinGen Manager position will support the ongoing efforts of the Clinical Genome Resource (ClinGen) research program at ACMG, directed by Dr. Meredith Weaver. This position entails assisting and guiding two ClinGen Clinical Domain Working Groups (CDWGs) in different stages of launching, scaling, and sustaining their work. The ClinGen Manager will support the CDWGs by preparing necessary paperwork, assisting participants, running meetings, and other activities as specified by the ClinGen Coordinator Resource and as new duties emerge. The ClinGen Manager will also train and oversee the coordinator of Expert Panels (EPs) and liaise between ClinGen leadership, the CDWGs and EPs, to facilitate the training of expert panel members. This individual will be expected to coordinate and participate in professional society meetings of the research groups and conference calls with international domain experts.

Successful job performance will require learning and implementing the curation frameworks and protocols developed by ClinGen. The ClinGen Manager will track the progress of their curation projects over the clinical domain and associated expert panels and will also provide feedback and updates on new procedures and ensure they are upheld (over the working groups in their purview).

 

At minimum, the ClinGen Manager will attend monthly calls of the Education, Coordination, and Training WG, the Biocurator WG, and semi-annual calls of the CDWG Leadership group. As a senior member of the ACMG Core, this individual is encouraged to seek other opportunities to contribute to ClinGen within the CDWGs they manage.

The selected candidate must have the ability to lead and contribute to the preparation of publications and/or reports, make presentations within department and/or at professional conferences, and contribute to and lead exchange of research information through demonstration and instruction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Data Analysis & Presentation of Results

  • Log and participate in the activities of the Working Group as discussed with the chair and co-chairs.
  • Maintain thorough and appropriate documentation of results.
  • Assist in preparation of research findings using standard computer software (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, web-based interface).
  • Communicate with NHGRI, PIs, Director, and other consortium members to ensure that the WG’s activities are accurately and comprehensively reported in the bi-annual progress reports.

Expert Panel & Work Group Coordination

  • Coordination activities will be performed in a timely and accurate manner.
  •  Maintain up-to-date working knowledge of the documentation, frameworks and processes for biocuration, and provide instruction and training of these updates to expert panels.
  • Organize and oversee CDWG and newly forming EP meetings, in conjunction with an Assistant Coordinator.
  • Assist in determining timelines and milestones for accomplishing assigned work with input from clinical domain working groups and expert panel co-chairs.
  • Maintain a schedule for working groups task leaders to provide updates to the internal ClinGen oversight committees.
  • Lead and participate in special projects that will support the goals of ClinGen, such as refining coordination resources and guidelines, evaluating coordination associated informatics tools, and developing novel approaches to coordination that may facilitate expedition of the expert panel processes for reviewing and approving curations.

Internal & External Communication

  • Maintain close contact with EP coordinators and provide aims, leadership, assistance, and oversight.
  • Communication should be bidirectional and frequent between the Sr. Coordinator and the EP coordinators and chairs.
  • Correspond and follow-up with co-chairs, domain experts, curators and other ClinGen consortium members.
  • Maintain an active roster of the working groups membership and help communicate the group’s goals to the public (e.g., regularly maintain the public website with working group products).
  • Meet semi-annually at professional meetings and conferences for updates, discussions, and horizon scanning which can include leading break-out teams to accomplish specific group goals, presenting talks and posters, and initiating relevant discussions with external groups and potential contributors.
  • Represent ClinGen at professional meetings and conferences and heighten global awareness of ClinGen through virtual and in-person presentations and networking.
  • Supervise and manage junior members of the ACMG core.
  • Attend and present at team meetings and contribute to research related strategy meetings.

Qualifications

  • Masters in Genetic Counseling, Genetics, or a related field in public health required.
    2 years of post-degree experience is preferred.
  • Must be well-versed in genetics and genomic medicine. 
  • Previous experience in management of small development groups and/or experience supervising other junior members of the team.
  • Responsible for coordination and training of expert panel members on biocuration and mandated processes as set by ClinGen.
  • Minimal travel is required to attend professional conferences and ClinGen Steering Committee meetings.
  • Must have the ability to comprehend and instruct others on the application of complex curation processes to various projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and passion for leading, coordinating, organizing, and interacting with diverse groups of people.
  • Must be a self-starter who is capable of independently and creatively identifying and resolving issues and exploring new ideas to enhance progress while maintaining strong communication with the ACMG core as well as external collaborators.
  • Strong work ethic and sense of purpose are necessary.
  • Knowledge of the scientific principles of biology, specifically the central dogma of genetics and a basic understanding of physiology and disease.
  • Effective verbal and written communication, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and hold high professional standards of work.

Additional Information

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is a largely sedentary position that requires the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. The selected candidate must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations with the ability to observe details at a close range (within a few feet of the observer) and lift small objects up to 20 lbs. across the office for various needs.
