Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Attorney Underwriter to examine titles, search real estate records, and compile a list of mortgage and other contracts.

WHAT YOU GET TO DO 

  • 1.       Underwriters are responsible for making the ultimate risk decisions regarding the most difficult title issues.

    a.       An Underwriter must have a background in addressing real estate title issues.

    b.      An Underwriter must be adept at applying the law and title standards to all of the various types of title issues.

    c.       An Underwriter must be adept at researching real estate laws and title standards across jurisdictions.

    d.      An Underwriter must become familiar with the internal processes of Premium Title Services to achieve an understanding of the responsibilities of the various teams and their relationship with the Underwriters.

    e.       An Underwriter must become familiar with Premium Title’s risk rules and tolerances designed specifically to address the needs of various clients.

    2.       Underwriters must be effective communicators.

    a.       An Underwriter must be able to communicate effectively their reasoning for making particular risk decisions internally, i.e. to Exam, ART and Settlement Teams.

    b.      An Underwriter must also be able to communicate effectively with external consumers whether they be Sellers, Buyers, Agents or Attorneys. Underwriters need to present themselves as reasonable and competent when dealing with external clients.

    c.       An Underwriter must be able communicate effectively and professionally with Underwriting Counsel for the Insurance Companies Premium Title represents as an Agent.

    3.       Underwriters must be effective educators.

    a.       Every escalation is an opportunity to teach an associate which rules should be applied and how they should be applied in a given situation. This will promote:

                                                                  i.      Greater competency in our Offshore and Onshore teams.

                                                                 ii.      Greater efficiency by using the right rules at the right time.

                                                               iii.      Reduction of claims by avoiding the misapplication or failure to apply the right rules; or the failure to recognize that an issue does not fit the rules and must be escalated.

    b.      Underwriters should be able to organize materials to design training courses to educate particular Teams regarding issues that they will encounter. Such trainings should:

                                                                  i.      Identify an issue of concern.

                                                                 ii.      Explain the importance of properly addressing the issue.

                                                               iii.      The legal reasons that make the issue a title concern.

                                                               iv.      How the issue should be addressed going forward.

    Specific Duties:

    1.       Apply the laws and title standards of the various States and jurisdictions to title issues escalated by Title Examiners, Title curative team (Asset Resolution Team (ART)).

    2.       Apply the laws and title standards of the various States and jurisdictions to approve documents required to complete a real estate transaction, i.e. POAs and Corporate/LLC/Partnership/Trust documentation.

    3.       Draft or edit internal rules/processes to be applied by the various Teams to address new or changing laws and underwriting standards.

    4.       Keep up to date on the laws, regulations and title standards in the jurisdictions for which you are responsible.

    5.       Obtain and maintain the licenses necessary to perform the required duties.

    6.       Establish professional relationships with the Underwriting Counsels of the title Insurance Companies we represent.

Qualifications

WHAT ABOUT YOU? You have… 

  • A thorough understanding of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of real estate title
  • Extensive knowledge of Federal and State regulations related to real estate title insurance 
  • Detailed knowledge of title processes, title insurance rates and forms, and rules and requirements for each state
