Job Description

The DevOps Infrastructure Engineer shall work closely with various Technology teams to deliver reliable, scalable and serviceable technical infrastructure to the Altenar product portfolio in a repeatable way.  The role shall be highly technical and demands a combination of inquisitive, conscientious and highly-organized behaviours to complement first rate technical skills in the fields of systems, storage and networking.  A consistent approach to performance and measurement shall underpin all activities. Information security considerations shall be a primary obligation of the role. The role is also responsible for infrastructure lifecycle management.

The DevOps Infrastructure Engineer is part of the collective that effectively implements DevOps practices and must be an effective communicator, using processes such as the Architecture Review and other peer review with other roles that make it all work (such as the DevOps Toolchain engineer, Security engineers and, where relevant, Development Team Leads).  The DevOps Infrastructure Engineer is fanatical about design and documentation and knows that a deep understanding of the system’s norm is essential to successful complex troubleshooting.  

Qualifications

Must have

  • Degree in a related major (Engineering / CS)
  • Proven system administration experience in heterogenous environments (Windows / Linux with RPM package management predominantly)
  • Basic scripting skills (bash, powershell, python or other)
  • Detailed knowledge of TCP/IP and related network protocols such as IP multicast, public IPv6
  • Solid understanding of redundancy mechanisms such as NIC teaming, link aggregation, shared storage clustering, TCP load-balancing, SSL offloading, majority node-set clustering, failure fencing
  • Solid understanding of process scheduling, virtual memory models, swap and troubleshooting performance in the operating system
  • Solid understanding of distributed/shared block storage, file storage, IO performance
  • Solid understanding of virtualisation using VMware, KVM and other technologies.
  • Good appreciation of information security concepts such as segregation, threat surfaces, and the importance of vulnerability management
  • Basic appreciation of the organization of parallel development streams and the use of code repository and versioning systems (based on Git), build systems
  • Excellent organizational skills and familiarity with project planning approaches/tools 
  • Strong documentation skills

Nice to have

  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with monitoring systems (Zabbix, Grafana, Prometeus)
  • Experience with log aggregation systems (Elastic / Graylog)
  • Experience with DB administration is a plus (MSSQL and NoSQL MongoDB)
  • Experience using deployment pipelines for infrastructure changes and management
  • Knowledge of .NET (.NET Core)

Additional Information

What you’d be responsible for

  • Design, creation, maintenance of shared systems such as NTP, DNS, monitoring clusters, log aggregation clusters
  • Deployment, operation and maintenance of site networks using multi-vendor technology such as hardware loadbalancing, 10G/40G Ethernet switching, inter-VLAN or microsegmentation firewalling, IP routing. 
  • Operate and support Altenar wide-area network connectivity, coordinate with and support office internetworking.
  • Operate and support Altenar’s on-premise and cloud-based Kubernetes clusters
  • Provide infrastructure expertise to the DevOp collective, support Automation team in environment preparation and as escalation for troubleshooting.

  • Communicating effectively with managers, leaders and subject-matter experts in a matrix organization with overlapping areas of ownership 
  • Plan work, report on progress, escalate blockers.
