Our first system, the Allye Max, is an innovative 320kWh mobile energy storage system using repurposed electric vehicle batteries. It is two-times cheaper and has 60% lower embedded CO2 than other similar systems. Our teams are developing the hardware and software solutions to transform our energy is managed at the grid-edge.

Following successful testing, pilots with major companies and further engineering development, the Max is now ready for series production. Due to our rapid growth, the team at Allye is expanding in multiple areas, increasing the depth and strength of our team of energy hustlers.

Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and disciplined Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join our leadership team and be an integral force in shaping the future of energy storage technology. You will set and execute our operational strategy, oversee ongoing operations while managing the financial performance of the business.

You will control diverse business operations, with day-to-day responsibility to plan, implement, manage, and control engineering- and operational-related activities and finances. You will work closely with the CEO and the board to set the direction and priorities of the organisation, and ensure that we have the resources, processes, and systems in place to deliver high-quality against our business plan.

You will lead all day-to-day operations, including finance, budgeting, business planning, purchasing, legal, and project management. You will develop and implement company policy and performance discipline to optimise operational efficiency. You will work closely with the Chief Industrialisation Officer, who is responsible for Manufacturing, Quality and Logistics, on the environmental, health and safety processes of the business.

With a strong finance background, this COO role will institutionalise best practice for a growth stage company, evaluating team structure and organisational processes to make informed recommendations to help the company scale rapidly. The objective is to design and build our operational processes for the company we are becoming rather than the company we are today.

Responsibilities

HR, people and culture

  • Design, develop, implement best-practice HR services for a growing startup
  • Deliver HR organisational excellence, resulting in high employee engagement
  • Develop, execute recruitment and retention strategies to attract top-tier talent
  • Implement effective employee support and personal development programs
  • Drive initiatives that enhance employee engagement, satisfaction, well-being
  • Work with senior stakeholders to optimise and develop organisational health

Customer service

  • Establish a customer-focused operations team to deliver customer support
  • Coordinate customer service, installation and field teams and planning
  • Deliver SLA targets and maximise operational uptime of all systems

Compliance, legal and IT

  • Manage all compliance activities across the business
  • Drive a Health and Safety first culture, monitor and support activities
  • Coordinate all legal, IP and patent activities across multiple jurisdictions
  • Lead ESG reporting, develop and implement a net zero plan
  • Create, implement, operate and enhance appropriate IT solutions

Operations development

  • Coordinate and manage KPIs and strategic objectives
  • Lead business planning to assess risk, review strategies, financial progress
  • Manage and track operating budgets and forecasts across teams

Finance

  • Manage cash-in/out, drive cash improvement plans to maximise runway
  • Manage the internal and external financial planning, analysis, and reporting
  • Develop and own all financial models and business case analysis
  • Create and distribute regular financial reports, including monthly P&L, budget
  • Establish financial and accounting systems, processes, tools, and controls
  • Manage BoM, COGS and Installation costs to track profitability
  • Oversee tax and accounting, including the preparation of annual accounts
  • Support Allye fund raising activities, including creation of reports and models
  • Lead and coordinate inputs for all grant submissions

Purchasing

  • Build purchasing function, processes and execute on a procurement strategy
  • Develop standards, controls, policies, procedures and performance metrics
  • Lead procurement negotiations and commercial contract discussions
  • Evaluate suppliers, ensure components meet time and quality standards
  • Optimise supply chain efficiency and identify opportunities for cost reduction

Qualifications

Must have

  • Master's degree in business, accounting, finance or economics
  • 10+ years experience in financial leadership and operating roles
  • Experience in scaling operations within a startup environment
  • Ability to manage the P&L of a business entity
  • Experience in leading corporate and project budgeting and forecasting
  • Demonstrable knowledge in corporate governance and financial advisory
  • Strong purchasing, negotiation and supplier management experience
  • An ability to drive change, implement process improvements, and deliver results
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the executive presence 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication and reporting capability
  • Self-directing, ability to coordinate and direct others.
  • Ability to lead and manage teams, as well as engage with staff at all levels of the organisation and exercise sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity and make decisions at pace
  • Strong problem-solving skills 

Nice to have

  • Leadership experience within the automotive and/or the battery industry or related technology startup
  • Good knowledge of electricity markets, the value chain and DSOs
  • Relevant experience in energy storage or renewable energy with a top-tier renewable energy developer, bank, or investor
  • Financial structuring and deal-making experience, including evaluating complex revenue structures
  • Strong knowledge of battery technologies and energy storage
  • Experience in global supply chains with a focus on lithium-ion batteries
