Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under minimum direction, oversees all maintenance personnel ensuring their compliance with the Facility Manager’s directives on safety and health, environmental and facility permit compliance, customer service, productivity, cost reduction, care of equipment, housekeeping, and recordkeeping.  Manages the performance of all maintenance functions including, but not limited to preventative, corrective and emergency maintenance on all equipment throughout the plant. 

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position functions under general management guidance and direction from the Plant Manager.  This position operates independently to meet both specific and general goals and objectives. The position is required to manage and direct the entire maintenance process. The objective is to improve machine effectiveness, machine and process capabilities and process uptime to maximize production efficiencies while meeting quality and customer requirements and/or proper disposal of the spent potliner in accordance with approved environmental guidelines.  The incumbent is required to have highly developed human relations skills to manage, direct, motivate, coach, lead and instruct subordinate personnel and to influence other plant and corporate officials.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  1. Maintains equipment records, inventory and manages the expeditious purchase and/or resupply of components, as necessary to complete assigned projects.  Works with outside machine vendors as necessary to acquire fabricated parts.  Tracks equipment history and drives improvement, defines PM practices, works with facility manager to plan and schedule routine outages for inspection and routine maintenance, reviews equipment malfunctions, identifies root cause, and develops corrective action plans to production harden equipment.
     
  2. Conducts predictive analysis of all process systems and equipment periodically to update preventative maintenance system.  Identifies equipment malfunctions, generates work orders, determines proper repair procedures and assigns appropriate personnel to accomplish the task.  Documents results based on schedule and priority.
     
  3. Using 3-phase theory and wiring techniques, manages troubleshooting, replacement of components and wiring, of electric motors, as necessary.
     
  4. Reads electrical schematics for control systems and is familiar with toning equipment for wire tracing.  Ensures that wiring boxes are neat and tidy at all times.
     
  5. Purchases the components and manages the installation of simple conduit runs including mounting small control boxes or disconnects, as well as flex conduit.
     
  6. Manages the troubleshooting and repairs of general air pneumatics, including air compressor operation and maintenance, regulatory replacement, so9lenoid valve replacement, 2-way and 3-way valve, pneumatic pump repair, tubing installation, and general system troubleshooting.
     
  7. Manages the maintenance of hydraulic systems including cylinder seal repair.  Cylinder replacement, bushing replacements (usually by outside machine shop), hose crimper operation (includes matching hose to fitting), fluid maintenance including filter change out., hydraulic pump replacement, valve stack repair and maintenance, fitting specification, and general trouble-shooting and adjustments.
     
  8. Manages the proper use of power tools associated with metal machining, including power drills, chop saws, reciprocating saw, grinder, and pneumatic hammers.  Use welder to fuse carbon steel and perform repairs.  Welds stainless steel or higher alloys or operates a TIG welder.
     
  9. Manages the installation CPVC piping up to 6” as was well as threaded steel pipe to 2” and soldered copper.
     
  10. Responsible for the hiring, training, and development of Maintenance Technicians.  Oversees contractors working at the facility, to insure quality of work, safety, housekeeping, and compliance per Alcoa policies and standards.
     
  11. Performs other related duties as required or requested to ensure a safe, clean, healthy and efficient facility.
     
  12. Maintain and foster positive employee relations and communications both within the Maintenance Organization and among the plant’s various departments. Maintain a good working relationship with the Union that represents our employees.
     
  13. Eliminate environmental non-conformances and comply with all Governmental and Alcoa standards. Communicate non-conformances with all Governmental and Alcoa standards with Plant Manager and EHS Staff.
  14. The job incumbent is accountable to meet assigned objectives and perform all duties in conformance with Alcoa Gum Springs Plant’s Environmental Health & Safety Policy and Alcoa’s Policy & Principles.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires an in-depth knowledge of both managerial and maintenance principles and theories.  The position requires highly developed human relations skills necessary to direct and motivate subordinate personnel and influence senior management in and outside of Gum Springs.

Demonstrates a good knowledge of power wiring using 3-phase theory and wiring techniques, in addition to general wiring techniques for 110V system.  Must know how to use a multi-meter for safer work practices and troubleshooting.

Demonstrates a good knowledge of controls and wiring and how to read electrical schematics for control systems.  Must be familiar with toning equipment for wire tracing and must understand signal wiring 24VDC systems and thermocouples.

Preferred experience with incinerators or similar high temperature process equipment/systems maintenance, including burners, CEM’s, high temperature refractory, process controls, PLC’s, combustion air blowers, pressure (draft) controls and conveyance systems.

Preferred experience with the maintenance of air pollution control devices to include:  baghouses, and evaporative coolers.

Must have experience with managing the use of forklifts, man-lifts, and various rigging equipment in the performance of maintenance activities.

Must have experience with general air pneumatics, including air compressor operation and maintenance, regulator replacement, solenoid valve replacement, 2-way and 3-way valve, tubing installation, pneumatic pumps and general system troubleshooting.

Must know how to maintain a hydraulic system and be able to read a hydraulic flow diagram.

Demonstrates the ability to use all power tools associated with metal machining, including power drills, chop saws, reciprocating saw, grinder, and pneumatic hammers.  Must be able to use soldering/brazing torches, and acetylene torches for cutting steel.  Must be able to use a welder to fuse carbon steel and perform repairs.

The ability to weld stainless steel or higher allows and to operate a TIG welder is a plus.

Incumbents in this position should have a bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or the equivalent in related work experience of progressively responsible experience in the aluminum processing or similar industry.
