Job Description

The Plant Manager functions under broad management guidance and general direction from the Vice President of Asset Management. 

The plant is transitioning from a single purpose role of processing aluminum industry wastes into a more full-service commercial hazardous waste treatment and disposal facility for non-aluminum customers. The role operates independently to implement the strategy and grow the business. 

The incumbent is required to solve highly complex problems with technical, managerial, and behavioral dimensions requiring analytical and adaptive thinking to reconfigure and optimize the location. 

At full operation, the role is responsible for directing, through subordinate managers, approximately 69 employees. The incumbent must have highly developed human relations’ skills to manage and direct subordinate managers to meet the EHS, production, maintenance, and quality objectives and for interacting with Customers and Community Leaders.

Major Activities: 

  1. Lead and ensure the implementation of all location and Corporate Environmental, Health and Safety initiatives.  Monitor and improve processes, procedures, and equipment to reduce or eliminate safety hazards and risks in the plant with a goal of achieving a zero OSHA recordable case rate.

  2. Maintain a high level of internal control over assigned business processes and implement controls to adequately manage business risks consistent with Alcoa expectations.  This involves continuous
    compliance, auditing, & certification of assigned business processes.

  3. Manage and direct the Maintenance & Engineering Manager to: plan, schedule, repair and maintain electrical and mechanical plant and equipment at the least possible cost while ensuring continuous and safe operations 365 days per year; and ensure the efficient and timely delivery of plant services to the various in-house users.

  4. Manage and direct the Production Manager to ensure the continuous, safe, and efficient processing of spent potliner according to production goals and within tolerances that meet customer specifications; and to maximize production and process efficiencies through implementation of
    improvements.

  5. Manage and direct the Staff Managers to achieve department goals and objectives in a timely and safe manner, while continuously improving subordinate skills and addressing their concerns.

  6. Assist in preparation of and monitor the operating departments' budgets to ensure costs are in line and to determine variances and the cause of variances.

  7. Maintain and foster positive labor relations and communications both within and among the plant's various departments.

  8. Establish ongoing training programs that focus on EHS, and the ABS principles that include customer satisfaction and effective use of our facility/equipment.

  9. Lead and direct the activities of the World-Wide Spent Potliner Lead Team ensuring cost effective disposal practices in accordance with all applicable laws and Alcoa standards.

  10. Represent Alcoa and Gum Springs Plant in Community Affairs in the Southwest Arkansas region.

  11. The job incumbent is accountable to meet assigned objectives and perform all duties in conformance with Alcoa Gum Springs Plant’s Environmental Health & Safety Policy and Alcoa’s Policy & Principles.

  12. Lead and direct efforts of the commercial team to evaluate and price third party waste streams.

  13. Have an intimate knowledge of RCRA TSDF operating, regulatory and compliance requirements. 

 

 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10 years of progressively responsible experience in hazardous waste disposal operations
  • Experience leading a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience owning a P&L entity
  • In-depth knowledge of managerial principles and theories. 
  • Ability to plan, develop and implement management systems and programs to improve performance and safety.  
  • Highly developed human relations skills necessary to direct and motivate employees and to influence management both inside and outside of Gum Springs. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.  
  • Well versed in Union/Management relationship issues.  
  • A college level education supplemented by extensive/seasoned experience in plant related activities.
