Marion P. Thomas Charter School (MPTCS) is the largest independently-operated free public charter school in Newark, NJ. MPTCS was established in 1999 by a group of individuals who were born and raised in Newark and wanted to provide the best possible educational experience for the next generation of Newarkers. The school is one of the only minority-led charter schools in Newark, reflecting both its student population and the community it serves. MPTCS has grown from four classrooms to four campuses and now serves 1,500 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

•   Conducts appropriate health services as mandated by Board policy and New Jersey School Law

•   Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care

•  Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters

•   Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students in accordance with New Jersey State Law

•   Observes students to detect health needs

•   Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness. Administers first-aid in accordance with established first-aid procedure

•   Visits student homes when necessary and contacts homes of children referred by staff.

•   Advises and assists the professional staff in the development and implementation of health and nutritional programs.

•   Teaches health classes and coordinates with specialty area teachers appropriate curriculum

•    Prepares and submits reports to the Principal and the State Board of Health.

•    Implements policy on exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.

•   Advises teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for individual student health defects.

•   Participates in the instructional programs related to health and nutrition upon request of the professional staff.

•   Participates in committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum

•  Conducts registration of all new students and determines their eligibility for enrollment in accordance with State health regulations.

•   Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy.

•  Maintains familiarity with current trends and practices in the field of school health and continuously improves professional competence through in-service programs, performance evaluations, and his/her individual professional improvement plan.

•  Serves as a resource to the Child Study Team

•   Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal

•   Contribute to the positive environment of the school
