Job Description
The Director of Engineering is responsible for the overall management and operation of the Engineering Department, ensuring the hotel's building, facilities, equipment, utilities, and technical systems are maintained in a safe, efficient, reliable, and cost-effective condition.
The position provides strategic and operational leadership to the Engineering team and ensures compliance with Pullman, Accor, statutory, safety, environmental, and engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Engineering Operations
- Lead and oversee the daily operations of the Engineering Department.
- Ensure all hotel facilities, building systems, equipment, and utilities operate safely and efficiently.
- Establish and implement preventive and corrective maintenance programs.
- Monitor the condition and performance of critical hotel systems, including electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, elevators, water systems, and other building facilities.
- Ensure timely response to engineering breakdowns and operational emergencies.
- Maintain accurate engineering records, maintenance schedules, and technical documentation.
2. Preventive & Corrective Maintenance
- Develop and monitor the hotel's preventive maintenance plan.
- Ensure regular inspection, servicing, testing, and calibration of engineering equipment.
- Minimize equipment breakdowns and operational disruptions through proactive maintenance.
- Analyze recurring technical problems and implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Coordinate major repairs and maintenance projects with relevant departments and external contractors.
3. Energy & Utility Management
- Monitor and control the hotel's consumption of electricity, water, gas, fuel, and other utilities.
- Develop initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
- Monitor utility consumption trends and investigate significant variances.
- Support the hotel's sustainability and environmental initiatives.
- Identify opportunities for energy-saving projects and technology improvements.
4. Budget & Cost Control
- Prepare and manage the Engineering Department's annual operating budget.
- Control maintenance expenses, utilities, spare parts, tools, and engineering supplies.
- Monitor departmental expenditure against budget.
- Evaluate quotations and proposals from suppliers and contractors.
- Ensure cost-effective procurement while maintaining required quality and safety standards.
- Prepare CAPEX proposals for replacement, renovation, and improvement of engineering assets.
5. Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with applicable local regulations, building codes, fire safety requirements, occupational health and safety standards, and environmental regulations.
- Maintain the hotel's engineering systems in accordance with statutory requirements.
- Ensure regular testing and inspection of fire protection and life-safety systems.
- Conduct engineering risk assessments and implement appropriate preventive measures.
- Support internal and external audits and ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Maintain emergency preparedness and participate in hotel emergency response procedures.
6. Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, motivate, and develop the Engineering team.
- Establish clear departmental objectives, responsibilities, and performance standards.
- Plan manpower requirements, duty rosters, and departmental work schedules.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
- Identify training and development needs for Engineering team members.
- Promote a strong culture of safety, teamwork, discipline, and continuous improvement.
7. Projects & Renovations
- Manage engineering aspects of hotel renovation, refurbishment, and improvement projects.
- Coordinate with contractors, consultants, project teams, and hotel management.
- Review technical drawings, specifications, and engineering proposals when required.
- Monitor project progress, quality, safety, and compliance.
- Ensure completed projects meet operational and engineering requirements before handover.
8. Vendor & Contractor Management
- Manage relationships with engineering contractors, consultants, suppliers, and service providers.
- Ensure contractors comply with hotel safety, security, and operational requirements.
- Monitor contractor performance and service quality.
- Review maintenance contracts and service agreements.
- Ensure statutory inspections and certification are completed within required timelines.
9. Guest & Operational Support
- Ensure engineering issues affecting guests are handled promptly and professionally.
- Work closely with Rooms Division, F&B, Security, Housekeeping, Culinary, and other departments to support smooth hotel operations.
- Respond to critical engineering incidents and minimize disruption to guest services.
- Support hotel management during special events, high-occupancy periods, and operational emergencies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical, Electrical, Building Services, or a related field.
- Minimum 8–10 years of relevant engineering experience, preferably within a 4- or 5-star hotel environment.
- Previous experience in a Chief Engineer / Director of Engineering / Engineering Manager position is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of hotel engineering systems, including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, and building maintenance.
- Strong understanding of preventive maintenance and energy management.
- Knowledge of applicable safety, environmental, and statutory requirements.
- Experience managing engineering budgets, CAPEX, contractors, and major maintenance projects.
- Strong leadership and people-management skills.
- Good analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Good communication skills in English and Bahasa Indonesia.
- Able to work under pressure and respond to emergencies outside normal working hours when required.
