The attorney will support the design, operation, and evolution of patient support programs across the product portfolio, including programs intended to facilitate access to prescribed therapy, provide patient education and product support, and promote appropriate adherence to treatment plans. The attorney will also advise on payer- and healthcare decision-maker-facing activities, including the compliant development, review, and presentation of Healthcare Economic Information (HCEI) and Pre-Approval Information Exchange (PIE) materials and communications.

A successful candidate will be motivated by the opportunity to address emerging issues with a strategic, creative, and business-oriented approach and to provide clear guidance on decisions affecting patient access and support as well as payer strategy.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Partner with AbbVie Patient Services personnel and other internal stakeholders to assess legal risks and support ethical, compliant business decisions.
  • Provide timely, risk-balanced advice on the design, implementation, modification, and discontinuation of patient support programs, including access and reimbursement support, hubs and contact centers, field reimbursement services, nurse and educator programs, adherence and education services, affordability offerings, no-charge product programs, and related digital or technology-enabled solutions.
  • Review patient-, healthcare provider-, field-, and leadership-facing materials involving patient services, reimbursement, affordability, enrollment, program terms, training, and support model positioning.
  • Counsel on the collection, use, sharing, and measurement of patient-services data, including program performance metrics, dashboards, vendor reporting, financial analyses, and appropriate access to patient-level information.
  • Serve as a strategic legal advisor to Market Access field teams on interactions with payers, formulary committees, pharmacy benefit managers, integrated delivery networks, health systems, and other healthcare decision-makers, including account planning, customer engagement, and the use of approved materials.
  • Advise on the development and field presentation of Healthcare Economic Information (HCEI), including appropriate audience, scope, and context.
  • Provide legal guidance on Pre-Approval Information Exchange (PIE) activities involving investigational products and unapproved uses.
  • Interpret evolving U.S. laws, regulations, guidance, and industry standards and provide practical, actionable advice. Relevant authorities include the federal Anti-Kickback Statute, False Claims Act, beneficiary-inducement rules, FDA requirements, OIG guidance, state healthcare laws, corporate-practice and professional-licensure requirements, privacy and data-use rules, and applicable industry codes.
  • Develop and deliver training, playbooks, templates, and practical guidance that strengthen legal acumen and promote consistent execution across the organization.
  • Collaborate with senior attorneys on projects, contracts, investigations, audits, complaints, government inquiries, and other matters that may affect patient-services strategy or execution.
