Job Description
Purpose
The Associate Engineer supports the design and execution of laboratory and corporate facility projects within Global Facilities. This entry-level role develops and maintains engineering drawings and documentation, supports electrical distribution design, and participates in laboratory renovation projects from design meetings through project execution. Working under the guidance of leadership and experienced engineers, the role applies foundational engineering principles, collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, and progressively develops project management capabilities while ensuring alignment with applicable standards, policies, and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Creates and updates engineering documentation, including one-line drawings, laboratory equipment drawings, layouts, and related design documents. Reviews existing drawings and standards to identify required updates and maintain accurate facility records.
- Supports the development of electrical distribution designs for laboratory and corporate facility projects under the guidance of experienced engineers. Applies foundational engineering principles, methods, and standards to develop practical design solutions.
- Participates in assigned laboratory renovation projects, including design meetings with internal clients, stakeholders, contractors, and vendors. Incorporates project requirements and stakeholder input into drawings and design deliverables.
- Interprets design and facility-related issues, evaluates available information, and recommends solutions within established engineering standards and project requirements. Reviews existing layouts and develops proposed designs for assigned areas.
- Supports compliance and applicable regulations and standards for Global Facilities, Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Global Policies; AbbVie Engineering Standards; and other governance areas as applicable. Assists in development and revision of procedures and standards.
- Plans and executes assigned portions of small-sized engineering projects. Initiates and manages an individual work plan, monitors progress against established schedules and deliverables, documents work status and communicates updates to management and project stakeholders.
- Develops project management capabilities over time by supporting project schedules, coordinating design activities, tracking action items, documenting agreements and commitments, and assisting with project execution and follow-up.
- Builds effective working relationships with colleagues, clients, stakeholders, contractors, and vendors by establishing rapport, understanding needs, promoting common goals, and following through on commitments.
- Communicates information effectively through verbal, written, and presentation formats to internal and external stakeholders. Uses appropriate communication protocols, keeps customers informed throughout projects or initiatives, and identifies opportunities to improve customer satisfaction.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science, or closely related discipline is desired or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence.
- Must graduate with a bachelor’s degree prior to the intended full-time start date.
- Entry level position, less than two years of experience is typical.
- Ability to quickly gain knowledge, understanding, or skill and willingly absorb and comprehend AbbVie processes, policies, and methods. Possess good human relation skills in both implementing and coordinating efforts involved across several disciplines.
- Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintains strong working relationship with internal and external collaborators.
- Listens to and understands others’ points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one’s own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations.
- Works well with other engineers in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment.
- Possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.
