We're seeking an exceptional commercial leader to join our New Zealand Leadership Team as Head of Commercial, New Zealand.

This is more than a commercial leadership position.

Reporting to the Country Manager New Zealand, you will sit at the centre of strategic decision making, leading sales and marketing execution while shaping the future direction of AbbVie's New Zealand business.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead development of annual and longer-term business unit plans, ensuring clear brand/indication strategies, growth priorities, resource allocation and measurable performance outcomes. 
  • Own achievement of P&Ls: sales, margin, market share and expense budget objectives for the assigned New Zealand business unit. 
  • Analyse market trends, sales potential, competitive dynamics, customer needs and patient/HCP experience to identify risks, opportunities and strategic choices. 
  • Evaluate the practicality and commercial potential of new products, indications and market developments, providing recommendations that support portfolio growth and market access priorities. 
  • Develop and maintain annual sales volume and profit forecasts, pricing assumptions and expense budgets, with regular forecast updates to support manufacturing, inventory and business planning. 
  • Lead cross-functional planning and implementation of strategies to accelerate brand/indication performance based on insights, challenges and opportunities. 
  • Translate marketing strategies into sales, promotional and multichannel execution plans that optimise HCP and patient experience and deliver business objectives. 
  • Ensure effective implementation of segmentation, targeting, channel strategy and marketing mix, including compliant development of materials, programs and tactics. 
  • Communicate strategic goals, positioning, messaging and tactical plans to internal customers, sales teams and external agencies, ensuring appropriate training and alignment. 
  • Coordinate advertising, promotion and business programs to ensure consistent execution and integration across sales, marketing, medical, market access and other functions. 
  • Provide strategic direction, coaching and leadership as a key member of the NZLT, helping to set the tone for the enterprise across culture, performance, equity and inclusion, and the development of our people. 
  • Lead people management activities including recruitment, retention, performance development, succession planning, capability building and training. 
  • Coach sales and account teams in-field, including the adoption and effective use of the Challenger model and capabilities such as analyse and optimise. 
  • Build an inclusive team culture that encourages clear, courageous feedback, agile execution and shared ownership of outcomes. 
  • Develop strategic relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to support business objectives, customer engagement and market-shaping priorities. 
  • Represent the New Zealand business unit in relevant cross-functional brand teams, working groups, business reviews and planning forums. 
  • Support planning, coordination and execution of cycle meetings and business reviews, ensuring clear business priorities and follow-through. 
  • Ensure all business activities comply with relevant Acts, legal requirements, ethical standards, the Code of Conduct and AbbVie internal policies. 
  • Review complaints, suggestions and business risks relating to assigned products and ensure timely escalation through appropriate channels. 
  • Report any adverse event within 24 hours as per AbbVie’s policies and procedures. 
  • Proactively participate in AbbVie’s WHS programs, adhere to policies and promote a safe work environment at all times. 
  • Adhere to AbbVie’s codes of conduct and compliance processes, including timely training and maintaining ethics and integrity. 
  • Other ad hoc duties such as administrative duties, as requested. 

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in science, business, marketing, management or related discipline, or equivalent experience with MBA or similar preferred  
  • Significant pharmaceutical or healthcare industry experience across commercial leadership (sales, marketing) and/or business unit management roles. 
  • Proven experience leading sales and marketing activities, including developing brand marketing plans, sales strategies, forecasts, pricing inputs and expense budgets with people leadership across functional/ business unit management roles. 
  • Strong strategic thinking and commercial acumen, including the ability to set business direction/vision, make trade-off decisions and drive accountable execution. 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach and develop sales and marketing teams for high performance. 
  • Advanced stakeholder management, influencing and negotiation skills across matrix, local, regional and external environments. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, including interpretation of market, customer, sales, forecast and financial information. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written, with the ability to align diverse stakeholders around clear priorities. 
  • High emotional intelligence, resilience and adaptability in a dynamic market environment. 
  • Strong customer and patient focus, with ability to convert insight into practical business action. 
  • Working knowledge of computer-based programs including AI, spreadsheets, presentation tools and business reporting systems. 
  • Experience transforming and evolving business models and culture   
  • Experience leading and influencing cross-functional teams in a matrix environment. 
  • Experience engaging internal and external stakeholders to support business objectives and responsible market development.
