Job Description

Purpose:

The primary objective of this position is to provide financial leadership, study forecasting, and business support for Oncology and OED therapeutic areas dynamic clinical portfolio within R&D Therapeutics, with portion of ~$2.5Bn spend.  Specifically, this role partners closely with the therapeutic leadership teams to establish prioritization and align related programs across the respective therapeutic area and business partners to optimize available funding and ensure financial commitments are met, interacting with all levels of finance and business leadership.

Core Responsibilities:

Financial Planning and Analysis:

  • Proactively lead the planning processes [Plan, LBE and LRP] ensuring accurate and timely integration of clinical study forecasts and other Externals spend types (PMed, CMC, etc.), ensuring senior management input to meet overall R&D / Corporate deadlines and deliverables.
  • Ensure financial planning and reporting deliverables are accurate, clear and concise for Executive level review and approval.
  • Ensure alignment of clinical assumptions with Commercial finance for Plan and LRP cycles.
  • Sponsor and drive initiatives to significantly improve agility and effectiveness of the clinical budgeting process including efficiency initiatives (e.g., procurement savings).

Business Partnering/FP&A:

  • Collaborate closely with various stakeholders [PPM, ASL, PI, TASC members] in prioritizing the portfolio for the Quarterly Portfolio Prioritization process to aid in making strategic portfolio decisions and proactively identifying roadmap scenarios and trade-offs as needed.
  • Review all funding requests to governance (EPG, DRC, LMG) and prepare governance financial summaries inclusive of all External spend types (PMed, CMC, etc.) for the VP, R&D Finance to present at the closed governance sessions.
  • Work cross functionally to drive integration of new companies/assets into the R&D portfolio.
  • Partner with the business to generate the monthly Items to Monitor List to provide financial transparency on upcoming program risks or pending changes.
  • Drive ad hoc analysis as business needs dictate.

Study Forecasting:

  • Lead team in developing costs to conduct multi-year clinical studies. Monitor study progress and revise study estimates with timely and relevant causals rationale for senior management. Maintain integrity of financials and strong internal control environment for clinical study accounting (ROSS accounting).
  • Lead team in providing study forecasts for deal models for all potential business development agreements including opt-ins, licensing deals and company/asset acquisitions. 
  • Be a strategic partner with business leaders to optimize decision making, meet financial commitments, ensure forecasts are appropriately built.
  • Adhere to the forecasting best practices and utilization of the R&D clinical cost calculator and cost categories established by the R&D forecasting COE and elevate unique or unusual situations.

People Leadership & Development:

  • Lead, direct and develop a team of [4-10] finance professionals by setting & aligning goals/priorities, motivating, and empowering the team to deliver exceptional results.

Financial Reporting and Internal Control:

  • Oversee general ledger and related month-end close activities to ensure accuracy and predictability of results, and to maintain compliance with AbbVie financial policies and control framework.
  • Prepare support for the quarterly and annual intangible asset valuations.
  • Develop effective reporting, monitor performance and support development of contingency plans as necessary to deliver results with clear and concise commentary.
  • Partner with the external and internal audit teams to complete all audit cycles effectively and implement any audit recommendations according to due dates as applicable.
  • Drive to continue to enhance internal controls and ensure financial results are recorded in compliance with AbbVie financial policies, SOX and GAAP.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 12+ years of progressive Accounting or Finance with 5+ years of management experience.
  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Finance or Accounting. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in leading and motivating a team in a dynamic business environment to successfully achieve results / deliverables  
  • Ability to solve business problems through the proactive identification of issues and subsequent collection, analysis, and interpretation of related data
  • Experience in a complex global organization as well as team environments and integrating activities across multiple functions / divisions. Pharmaceutical sector experience a plus.
  • Strong PowerPoint skills, scenario planning experience and data presentation skills/storytelling.
  • High personal integrity, energy and objectivity.

Preferred:

  • MBA in Accounting or Finance and / or CPA
  • Solid understanding of automated accounting systems such as SAP, BPC, and desktop productivity applications
