Job Description

AbbVie's Local Delivery and Translational Science group seeks a Senior Scientist II/Principal Research Scientist I to lead translational science activities across the eyecare therapeutic portfolio. The successful candidate will drive program execution from preclinical development through early clinical translation in close collaboration with internal teams and external research partners.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as translational science lead and primary scientific representative across a diverse, multi-program eyecare development portfolio spanning preclinical through early clinical stages
  • Apply computational and data science approaches to synthesize and interpret biological datasets, generating evidence-based insights to support portfolio evaluation and program decision-making
  • Oversee preclinical study design, data review, and interpretation in collaboration with internal study teams, ensuring scientific rigor and alignment with program objectives
  • Develop translational plans that map preclinical evidence to early clinical decision points, ensuring continuity across development stages
  • Coordinate external research partnerships with CROs, academic collaborators, and biotech partners, including data management and scientific communication
  • Serve as scientific author for regulatory briefing documents and cross-functional program summaries
  • Synthesize input from drug delivery, clinical pharmacology, regulatory affairs, and business development to inform integrated program plans
  • Present scientific findings and program-level summaries to internal leadership and at external scientific meetings
  • Apply scientific judgment and analytical rigor to evaluate eyecare therapeutic candidates and inform portfolio prioritization and asset advancement decisions

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Senior Scientist II Qualifications: PhD with 4+ years, Master's with 10+ years, or Bachelor's with 12+ years of relevant experience in a biological, biomedical, computational biology, or related life science discipline
  • Principal Research Scientist I Qualifications: PhD with 6+ years, Master's with 12+ years, or Bachelor's with 14+ years of relevant experience in a biological, biomedical, computational biology, or related life science discipline
  • Therapeutic area experience in ophthalmology, including familiarity with retinal disease biology and multiple treatment modalities
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (Python, R, or equivalent) for analysis and visualization of complex biological datasets
  • Experience with in vivo preclinical studies, including disease model development, study oversight, and interpretation of pharmacodynamic and efficacy endpoints
  • Track record of effective cross-functional collaboration in a matrixed pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment
  • Strong scientific communication skills, including preparation of technical documents and presentations to diverse audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience presenting scientific findings to external advisory boards, regulatory bodies, or equivalent forums
  • Familiarity with the translational development considerations for novel or emerging ophthalmic therapeutic approaches
  • Experience developing or applying translational biomarker strategies in preclinical or early clinical settings
