Job Description

The Applied AI Engineer within the Operations Transformation group will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing AI and machine learning solutions to drive innovation and operational excellence across AbbVie’s manufacturing, supply chain, and quality operations. This role will serve as a translator between technical programming teams and functional business leaders and will work closely with cross-functional teams including Operations, Engineering, IT, and Data Science to deliver AI-powered improvements in efficiency, quality, and agility in a regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and define opportunities to apply AI and machine learning to operations challenges (e.g., predictive maintenance, process optimization, quality monitoring)
  • Map, analyze, and assess current-state business processes to identify inefficiencies and improvement opportunities, and to inform where AI-enabled solutions can drive the most value
  • Translate operations needs into clear AI/ML problem statements and success metrics
  • Partner with data science, engineering, and IT teams to select appropriate algorithms, technologies, and tools and ensure solutions meet business and compliance needs
  • Support vendor assessment, selection and drive prioritized use cases from initial scoping through technical proof of concept in partnership with engineering, IT, and external vendors
  • Partner with automation, robotics, and digital teams to enable intelligent process automation and advanced analytics
  • Integrate AI/ML solutions with operations data platforms (MES, SCADA, ERP, IoT) and ensure seamless deployment in production environments
  • Establish robust documentation, testing, monitoring, and model management practices to ensure AI solutions remain reliable, explainable, and compliant (GxP, FDA, data privacy)
  • Participate in AI governance, best practice development, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support change management, training, and knowledge transfer to enable successful adoption of AI capabilities within operations
  • Stay up-to-date with emerging trends in AI, ML, and manufacturing digital transformations relevant to pharmaceutical operations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business, Operations, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or another relevant field, or equivalent practical experience. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience building and deploying AI/ML solutions, preferably in manufacturing, supply chain, or quality environments.
  • Strong understanding of AI and machine learning concepts, with prior experience applying them in real-world settings to solve operational or business problems; able to partner effectively with hands-on engineering teams for implementation and deployment.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML models into operational/IT systems (MES, SCADA, IoT, ERP, cloud).
  • Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with GxP, FDA, and data privacy requirements is a plus.

AbbVie is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we encourage candidates of all backgrounds to apply.
