Job Description
The Assistant Controller drives all aspects of the financial planning (Plan, LBEs and LRP) processes for AbbVie R&D and presents such data in a clear and concise manner to enhance management’s decision-making process.
The position is responsible for ensuring adequate financial and systems controls are in place and consistent with AbbVie policies and procedures, as well as generally accepted accounting principles, displaying an ability to effectively and efficiently translate financial implications of both strategic and tactical operational issues, and communicating and counseling the respective R&D and support organizations on how best to structure operations, system investments, and other business initiatives to maximize the financial return for AbbVie.
This position will also interact with all levels of management within R&D, Corporate and other AbbVie Functions. This position also assists in managing the R&D and supporting functions spending and capital budgets, including due diligence for specific spending decisions and capital programs.
Major responsibilities:
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Provide detailed support for financial analysis as required by various levels of R&D management, including the Chief Scientific Officer, Controller and direct support staff.
- Drive and lead R&D financial planning, including P&L, headcount, compensation, capital, balance sheet and CFO book content for AbbVie R&D LBEs, Update, Plan and LRP. Create, consolidate, and deliver executive level presentations for each planning cycle. Includes providing strategic input in completion of consolidated results.
- Provide financial support related to R&D HQ budgets.
- Provide leadership in strategic/tactical financial analysis to maximize financial return on business change opportunities, project prioritization and rationalization, HR talent sourcing, etc.
- Act as a change agent for transformation or optimization efforts working with all levels of management as well as cross functionally.
Reporting/Control
- Lead development of and process for providing monthly reports that include appropriate variance analyses and insightful commentary on business performance.
- Ensure consistent recording and reporting of all transactions such that the financial results properly reflect the impact of the business operations.
- Ensure internal controls are in place and relevant AbbVie policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Supervise and support R&D Entity planning and the submission of forecasts by asset and intellectual property owners for use by Tax department to identify AbbVie’s global tax rate.
- Supervise and support R&D time reporting of ~13,000 R&D time reporters.
- Oversee R&D data governance including data standards and structure, establishing related business rules and process, instituting data quality metrics, and overseeing master data operations withing a given domain.
- System owner of the financial and time reporting aspects of the R&D ecosystem. The ecosystem is fundamental to support financial reporting and planning, R&D tax credit, Orphan Drug credit, and R&D IRA response.
Leadership
- Lead a team of approximately 25 financial professionals. Attract, develop and retain top talent, and strengthen R&D Finance’s reputation as an attractive and desirable workplace.
- Proven experience in establishing, communicating, and nurturing a positive and inclusive organizational culture that aligns with company and department values, including championing culture events, promoting inclusion, encouraging team-building, and empowering employee development.
- Develop one’s individual knowledge base so that this role continually meets or exceeds the customers’ expectations.
- Proactively participate in financial department meetings, develop and assist the team by taking on added responsibilities, obtain adequate and appropriate training to maximize the effectiveness of one’s performance.
- Obtain feedback on performance and opportunities for additional improvement from customers and management.
- Within guidelines, the incumbent functions independently in developing relevant policies and procedures and promotes an environment of good internal controls.
- Must be able to perform activities and meet deadlines without direct supervision of the R&D VP's and Controller.
Qualifications
- BS Degree in Finance or Accounting.
- 10+ years of financial experience in the areas of financial analysis, cost accounting, auditing and/or treasury.
- 5+ years of experience at the manager level in these same disciplines.
- Strong organization, communication and management skills are essential in this position.
- Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred:
- MBA, CPA and/or CMA is strongly preferred
Knowledge of US Pharmaceutical market and competitive landscape

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at thetime of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location,and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.

This job is eligible to participate in our short-term incentive programs.
