Job Description

This position will support R&D laboratories, R&D Pharmaceutical Pilot Plant and other R&D functional areas located in Lake County.  The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Technician will be working under the direction of the R&D EHS Section Manager. Responsible for implementation and maintenance of specific, environmental, health and safety programs as assigned by management in response to existing and anticipated federal, state, local and company regulations to reduce AbbVie’s liability and/or impact on the community.   This position is located at the North Chicago site.

Responsibilities: 

  • Support scientists, operations and other general staff on the application of EH&S principles to ensure work practices are implemented, and equipment utilized, to reduce injury and illness potential and overall risk to AbbVie.
  • Support Pilot Plant Design and Direction Sets reviews, identify safe practices and PPE required for hazardous materials used in processes.
  • Provide day-to-day support for laboratory safety, engage with business areas ensuring alignment with lab safe practices and Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Perform hazardous material reviews for new materials, update GHS information into SAP etc.
  • Support industrial hygiene monitoring (noise, air etc.) to ensure exposures are within regulatory requirements and develop written reports.
  • Ownership is taken to ensure compliance with current regulations including internal AbbVie policies/procedures and Global EHS Technical Standards as assigned.  Assure assigned EHS policies, programs, training and procedures are developed/ updated and implemented and assist in the safety and health training of personnel.
  • Contractor/construction safety representative engaging with contractors ensuring safe work practices are followed.
  • Participate in incident investigations, support implementation of corrective actions and tracking actions to completion. Support initiatives to build a culture of safety through employee engagement and participation.
  • Conduct EHS inspections and risk assessments throughout support areas to limit AbbVie’s regulatory liability. Collect safety metrics, compile data, and present safety information to business areas.
  • Provide general support to Lake County (LC) EHS staff on complex programs as assigned, as well as assisting with EHS initiatives (i.e., coordinating laboratory project rollouts, 5S, recycling/cleanout initiatives, Green Chemistry, etc.).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in environmental and safety administration or occupational health and safety, or pharmaceutical pilot plant or pharmaceutical manufacturing or laboratories.
  • From 0 to 1 year of experience in an Environmental, Occupational Health and/or Safety capacity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with computers, databases, and integration of information in tracking systems.
  • General knowledge of Quality, OSHA and Environmental regulations.

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
