Job Description

The Director of R&D Finance is responsible for the financial support of all Global R&D Functions including Discovery, Development Sciences, Development, Clinical Development Operations, Project Management, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs, HEOR, Patient Safety, Quality Assurance.

  • Responsible for the financial support of all Global R&D Functions including Discovery, Development Sciences, Development, Clinical Development Operations, Project Management, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs, HEOR, Patient Safety, Quality Assurance, etc.
  • Provide full financial support for Domestic and International R&D sites including Lake County Site, AbbVie Bay Area (ABA), AbbVie Bioresearch Center (ABC), Cambridge MA, Ludwigshafen Germany and Schaffhausen Switzerland.
  • Oversight of Total Therapeutics Internals budget responsibility of ~$4.2B (2024).
  • Responsible for the financial support and justification of R&D capital investments totaling ~$240MM (2024).
  • Responsible for the tracking, justification, and forecasting of ~13,000 R&D headcount / contractors
  • inclusive of vetting functional demand vs capacity implications on resource needs.
  • Accountable for Monthly, Quarterly, and Annual financial actuals reporting related to Global R&D
  • Functions and related sites, inclusive of analyzing and understanding performance variances by function and overall foreign exchange variances if material.
  • Review and approve all R&D financial transactions and related contracts for expenditures up to $10MM (in relation to ~$4.2B budget responsibility).
  • Responsible for internal and external audit support as it relates to the Sr. Director’s scope of financial responsibility.
  • Supports completion and review of the annual Plan, Update, Long-Range Plan, and Latest Best Estimates for all functions / sites within the role’s scope of responsibility.
  • Leverage cross-functional financial knowledge (i.e. cost accounting, commercial accounting, business development, etc) to challenge and negotiate financial terms of inter-organizational (Operations, Commercial, Corporate) operating agreements.
  • Responsible for the review and approval of all Requests for Capital Expenditure (RCEs) that are required to go to the Corporate Suite, as well as Board of Director (BOD) presentation materials that will be utilized to summarize capital investments requiring BOD approval.
  • Drives major R&D integrations, efficiency, and restructuring projects with significant financial and operational impact.
  • Prepare financial approval packages for R&D reductions in force.
  • Adhoc business consulting on a myriad of topics/projects including outsourcing/offshoring, rent vs build analytics, resource optimization, operating expense optimization, travel expense optimization,Global Trade Compliance, etc. driving long-term, material financial and business benefits.
  • Oversight, coaching, motivation, and development of a direct staff of 7 Finance Directors with accountability for a total indirect staff of 60 Finance professionals.
  • Continuous sitting for prolonged periods (more than 2 consecutive hours in an 8 hr day) is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and 12-15 years of related work experience. CPA/MBA preferred.
  • Diversified finance experience preferred with knowledge of Cost Accounting and Commercial Finance being helpful. 
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards affecting the pharmaceutical industry. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required with a proven ability to convert the complicated to the simple for executive level stakeholders. 
  • Prior financial support of executive level business clients required.
  • Experience in leading and motivating a team in a dynamic business environment.
