Senior Legal Counsel - Payments

As Senior Legal Counsel for Payments, you’ll be the subject matter expert for the ASOS Payments Team. You will work closely with the Director of Payments and business on commercial, partnership and contractual matters and payments projects.
Whilst the role will be payments focused, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity and drive to support and be involved in other workstreams across the Technology, Marketing and Corporate Services areas.
This role will be critical in helping the team meet the needs and requirements of all elements of ASOS’ business across the globe, requiring the ability to give commercial as well as legal advice, to operate comfortably and effectively in many different jurisdictions, and to promptly identify risks and issues that need to be escalated within the Group.
The role requires someone who is hands-on and commercially minded, with a strong professional ethic and the energy, interest and training to pursue a broad spectrum of payments matters. ASOS is fast paced, so all employees also need to be adaptable, and be enthused and excited about what’s around the corner for us. Communication is key, as our team members continually build relationships at all levels across the business.
What you'll be doing...
This is a high impact, commercially focused, senior legal role - you will be the key legal contact for all things payments, and will be responsible for partnering with, guiding and supporting all of the legal support required by ASOS’ Payments Team. You will be required to operate cross-functionally, not just within the Legal Team, but across the entire ASOS business. There are several key elements to the role:
·Work closely with the Finance, Technology and Procurement Teams to assist with the implementation of payment and FinTech solutions to support our various ecommerce offerings.
·Drafting, structuring and negotiating all payments contracts with ASOS’s payments providers including, for example, payment gateway contracts, acquiring contracts, Buy Now Pay Later contracts and other alternative payment methods.
·Liaise with the business to manage payment supplier performance and related disputes.
·Provide specialist sector knowledge and expertise on the finance / payments aspects of other ASOS contracts and negotiations generally.
·Be the legal representative in strategic decisions and setting direction for Payments at ASOS.
·Working with other members of the Technology, Marketing & Corporate Services Team, assist across a range of matters from time to time, which may include advising on, drafting and negotiating:
oTech contracts for software development and licensing, SaaS, PaaS, hosting, service level agreements, telecoms, consultancy and related services, outsourcing and hardware provision;
oMarketing focused contracts including agency agreements, adtech, affiliate relationships, brand partnerships, sponsorship agreements, public relations; and
oServices agreements for services such as audit, consulting, tax, finance, procurement, travel, health, insurance and office management services with a range of service providers including consulting firms, legal advisers, corporate sustainability advisers, insurance providers, travel firms and procurement specialists.
We'd love to meet someone with...
·Qualified Solicitor (level is guide).
·Has experience in drafting and negotiating a range of payments contracts.
·Has knowledge of regulation in the payments space including financial licensing regimes (preferred and detailed knowledge not essential).
·Experience in or willingness to learn other areas of practice (Tech, Marketing and Corporate).
·Adopts an approachable and adaptable manner to ensure excellent communication and interaction with the wide variety of different people and personalities within the unique environment of ASOS, across all levels and geographies.
·Has previous experience working in a fast-paced, growing, agile, adaptable in-house commercial environment.
