Job Description
Join our team to develop Java-based applications for advanced submarine systems in the Defence sector. You’ll design and implement RESTful APIs, collaborate on system architecture, and ensure compliance with secure coding practices and defence standards. This is an exciting opportunity to work on mission-critical software that underpins naval operations, applying your expertise in Java, Agile development, and system modelling to deliver robust, scalable solutions.
Location: Dorset
On-site: Hybrid (3 days per week)
Seniority: Senior (5+ years’ experience)
Clearance: Eligible for SC Clearance
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain Java-based applications within a service-oriented architecture.
- Implement and manage RESTful APIs for integration and interoperability.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with defence standards and security requirements.
- Participate in system design and architecture reviews using Enterprise Architect.
- Apply Agile development practices and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Required Skills
- Strong proficiency in Java and REST API development.
- Experience with IntelliJ IDEA and Atlassian toolset (Jira, Confluence).
- Knowledge of Enterprise Architect for system modelling.
- Understanding of secure coding practices and defence sector requirements.
Soft Skills & Collaboration
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary environments.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical mindset.
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and containerisation technologies (e.g., Docker).
- Experience with secure software development lifecycle.
- Knowledge of Defence domain processes and safety-critical standards.
Required Qualifications
- Must be eligible for or already hold UK Security Clearance (SC)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline OR relevant technical military background with proven software development experience.
