At ALTEN UK, we’re seeking a Systems Engineer to join a high-profile project supporting next-gen sensor technologies for maritime operations. You'll contribute across the full engineering lifecycle, from requirements and architecture through to integration, test, and delivery — helping enhance the resilience and readiness of Royal Navy platforms.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead and support system integration efforts for real-time embedded software and sensor technologies, working closely with cross-functional teams.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain system requirements using DOORS, ensuring full traceability to design and test.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical assessments, and risk-based decision making throughout project phases.
  • Contribute to test strategy development, including planning and execution of integration and system-level testing.
  • Support through-life engineering activities including defect tracking, system upgrades, and configuration management.

Qualifications

Essential Skills:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in systems engineering, particularly in aerospace or defence sectors, with a strong background in optical systems or opto-electronic engineering preferred.
  • Proven experience with the left-hand side of the V-model (requirements analysis, design, integration).

  • Strong understanding of systems interfaces, boundaries, and other external factors impacting design.
  • Develop functional definitions of system behaviour and ensure the system’s performance aligns with the specified needs
  • Ability to analyse operational concepts and work proactively in identifying and resolving project challenges.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with decomposition of systems design to sub-system level.
  • Knowledge of systems modelling techniques.
  • Contribute to test procedure development and support the verification of the system through integration and verification testing.
  • self-starter who can drive projects forward and overcome obstacles.

Qualifications/Security:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Master’s preferred) OR
  • Military/Armed Forces background in a technical or engineering role is equally valued.
