Job Description

Shape the numbers behind Europe's energy transition

Germany's power market is being rebuilt in real time: a battery storage boom, growing hours of negative prices, redispatch pressures, and the design of a national capacity mechanism are changing how every asset on the system earns its money. Our clients, from utilities and investors to developers and governments, need quantitative answers before they commit capital. That is what our market modelling team in Berlin delivers.

As an Analyst or Consultant in our market reporting, analysis and modelling practice, you will work with BID3, AFRY's in-house European power market model, and build the analyses behind investment decisions, asset valuations and policy advice across the German and European markets.

What you will do - your main tasks

  • Model the German and European power markets with BID3 and self-built tools, translating scenarios into price forecasts, dispatch results and revenue projections
  • Assess flexibility technologies and their trading strategies: batteries, gas turbines and other flexible assets, including revenue stacking across day-ahead, intraday and balancing markets
  • Turn model results into client-ready insight: reports, presentations and contributions to proposals, with early client exposure and growing responsibility
  • Track German and European market and policy developments (capacity mechanism design, renewables build-out, grid and redispatch, negative prices) and feed them into our data, assumptions and methods
  • Improve our modelling toolkit: methods, data pipelines and analytical tools used across the practice

What you bring - your profile

  • A strong quantitative degree (energy economics, economics, engineering, physics, mathematics or similar), either fresh from university or with up to about two years of relevant experience
  • Solid analytical and programming skills; you are comfortable in Python and Excel, and ideally have touched optimisation or dispatch modelling in studies, a thesis or a first job
  • A demonstrable interest in power markets, for example through coursework, a thesis, an internship or personal projects; hands-on experience with a market model is a plus, not a prerequisite, as we will train you on BID3
  • Professional level of German and English language, written and spoken, is essential
  • Curiosity, precision and the ability to explain quantitative results to non-modellers

What you get - our offer

  • Build up strong modelling competences by training on BID 3
  • A structured competence development path in market modelling
  • A dedicated experienced consultant as your mentor, with continuous, direct feedback and a career path you shape yourself
  • Early exposure to clients across the European energy industry and a fast-growing professional network
  • Work at the centre of the topics defining the German market right now: flexibility, storage, capacity market design and the economics of the energy transition
  • Hybrid working from our Berlin office, as part of an international modelling practice within AFRY, a European leader in engineering, design and advisory services

Sound like you?

Send us your CV and a short note on why power markets interest you. No cover letter essay needed; a thesis, project or piece of analysis you are proud of says more.
