Thesis project: Simplified suspension load calculation method

  • Intern
  • Competence area: Student Assignment and Thesis Work
  • Contract Type: Temporary

Company Description

AFRY is a European leader in engineering, design, and advisory services, with a global reach. We accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable society. We are more than 19,000 devoted experts in infrastructure, industry, energy and digitalization. We accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society for generations to come.
AFRY  is among engineers rated as one of the most popular employers in Sweden.

Job Description

We are now looking for one or two master students for this master thesis:

Background
When designing a wheel suspension for a vehicle, the distribution of loads from the road contact is dimensioning for material selection and design concepts. Therefore it´s important to early in a vehicle project have some realistic initial loads to start from. MBD simulations normally starts with focus on K&C, while the FE engineer wants to focus on loads.

Objective
The objective of this thesis project is to develop an FE based method for suspension load calculation in early phases and correlate it to a more traditional MBD model based method. Evaluate the influence of bushing compliance and sensitivity of minor geometry changes.

The result should be a validated FE method and user guideline, useful for future vehicle project concept phases.

Method

  • From an existing suspension geometry, build up one FE model and one MBD model.
  • Define critical loadcases and apply loads in both models.
  • Perform sensitivity studies, varying parameters
  • Draw conclusions from comparison of the models

Deliverables
A report containing:

  • Guidelines and method description for the FE based method
  • Limitations of the FE based method

Qualifications

Master Programs: Applied Mechanics, Mobility Engineering.
The project is suitable for 2 students and will be performed in Trollhättan.
