For their Hydropower-Sustainability team AFRY is seeking a Junior Biodiversity Specialist with 2 or more years of experience in conducting biodiversity assessments. As a Junior Biodiversity Specialist, you will support the Biodiversity Team in tasks such as preparations of Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIAs), Critical Habitat Assessments (CHA), Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs), including the implementation of offset measures in compliance with International Lenders Standards (IFC PS6 or similar). You will also support the team in the design of biodiversity baseline data collection, coordinating with partners, and monitoring of field surveys alike. Most biodiversity assessments will be for hydropower projects but may extend to solar- or wind farm projects or linear infrastructure such as railways or transmission lines.

The Specialist would either be based in Vientiane (Lao PDR) or Bangkok (Thailand) and must be willing to travel a lot for the different projects in the region.

Job Description

We are looking for a person with the following profile:

  • Junior Biodiversity Specialist with 2+ years of experience in the field of Biodiversity Assessments (e.g., habitat assessments, species surveys)
  • Have a basic understanding of procedures of an ESHIA, ESMMP, other E&S assessments, and ESIA approval process
  • Willingness to learn and develop into a Senior Biodiversity Specialist capable of carrying out Critical Habitat Assessments and prepare Biodiversity Action Plans
  • Interested in developing a sound understanding of International Lenders Standards, particularly IFC Performance Standards and ADB Safeguard Requirements is considered an advantage.
  • Based in Bangkok or Vientiane, but is willing to travel and carry out frequent field work for EIAs including field surveys for baseline assessments and monitoring in various countries
  • Willing to work as part of an interdisciplinary team for international hydropower and renewable energy projects in Southeast Asia and beyond

Qualifications

  • Thai or Lao national (excellent in Thai or Lao language in writing, listening, speaking and reading)
  • Master’s degree or PHD degree in relevant fields such as Biology, Zoology, Conservation Biology, Wildlife Conservation, Aquatic Ecology, Conservation and Restoration Science, Fisheries, or similar
  • Very good working proficiency in English language (TOEIC score of 800+ or equivalent), submission of English testing is encouraged.
