Company Description

AFRY is a European leader in engineering, design, and advisory services, with a global reach and more than 18,000 devoted experts, operating within the fields of infrastructure, industry, energy and digitalization. We accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society and are always scouting for talents that can help us meet the ever-increasing demand for the services we provide.

Job Description

We are excited to welcome a couple of students for a Master Thesis Project within Automotive in Gothenburg.

Title: Packaging and energy simulations of electrical motors and traction batteries for propulsion of a trailer.

Background: An electrically propelled trailer creates opportunities for longer range specifically for electric trucks and substantial improvement of fuel economy if used with Diesel trucks leading to lower emissions over a trip. In addition, there exists a prospect of using trailer braking for improved stability while regenerative braking coasting down slopes, storing energy and reusing it to aid in uphill climbs.

To achieve this, one of the most important studies to be made is of the batteries and motors available on the market and the packaging of all associated components on the trailer. Parameters such as battery size, power, motor torque, Gross Combination Weight, cost of components etc. will affect the viability of the electric trailer. These parameters need to be used in a simulation environment before decisions can be made about which specifications work best for the given use case. In addition, the physical positioning of these components play a vital role in the stability and performance of the truck-trailer combination.

Purpose/Goals:

  • Component selection and placement
  • Simulate fuel savings and range when used in combination with a truck
    - Grade-ability – Can the combination keep speed on slopes?
    - Retardation down the slope while keeping speed

Objectives:

  • Packaging of electrical components
    - Selection & placement of battery modules and electric motor on the trailer chassis.
    - Tool: PTC Creo
  • Simulation of battery and electric motor
    - Simulate the fuel consumption, range etc
    - Tool: MATLAB/Simulink or python (Set up will be provided and is not expected to be developed by the student)
