Job Description

Job Summary

The Principal Transport Engineer will be responsible for delivering and managing transport planning and traffic engineering studies across a range of infrastructure, development, and masterplanning projects. The role requires strong technical capability, project delivery experience, and the ability to coordinate with clients, authorities, multidisciplinary teams, and junior staff.

The Principal Transport Engineer will contribute to the development of technical solutions, manage day-to-day project activities, review technical outputs, and support Project Managers and Technical Leads in delivering projects to a high professional standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and undertake transport planning and traffic engineering studies for development, infrastructure, and masterplanning projects.
  • Prepare and review Traffic Impact Studies (TIS), Transport Assessments, mobility studies, access and circulation assessments, and traffic management assessments.
  • Undertake traffic analysis, junction capacity assessments, network assessments, trip generation, trip distribution, mode share, parking demand, and transport demand assessments.
  • Develop and review transport planning assumptions, methodologies, technical reports, calculations, and supporting documentation.
  • Support strategic and detailed transport modelling activities, including preparation of model inputs, review of model outputs, and interpretation of results.
  • Assess the impact of proposed developments and infrastructure schemes on surrounding transport networks.
  • Develop practical and technically sound recommendations to address identified transport issues.
  • Ensure technical work complies with relevant design standards, guidelines, project requirements, and authority requirements.
  • Manage day-to-day technical activities and deliverables for assigned projects, ensuring work is completed within agreed programme, budget, and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate inputs from multidisciplinary teams, including highways, urban planning, infrastructure, rail, public transport, and other technical disciplines.
  • Monitor project progress and identify technical, programme, resource, and delivery risks.
  • Support Project Managers and Technical Leads in managing project scope, deliverables, and client requirements.
  • Assist with fee proposals, scopes of work, resource planning, and technical approaches for new opportunities.
  • Liaise directly with clients, government authorities, developers, and other stakeholders.
  • Attend technical meetings and workshops and present transport findings and recommendations.
  • Coordinate with relevant transport authorities and respond to technical comments and review requirements.
  • Build and maintain effective professional relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Represent the company professionally during project and authority meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Transport Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Economics, or a closely related discipline
  • Chartered status or professional membership with a recognized body such as CIHT (Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation), TPS (Transport Planning Society), or ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers)
  • Extensive experience (typically 12+ years) in transport planning, with demonstrated expertise in scheme appraisal, evaluation, and business case development
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering multi-disciplinary transport planning projects in compliance with DfT and Treasury guidance
  • Advanced proficiency in analytical techniques and industry-standard transport modeling software and tools
  • Strong project management and resource management capabilities, with evidence of sound commercial awareness and proven management techniques
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage confidently with senior-level stakeholders and clients
  • Demonstrated experience in client relationship management and business development within the transport planning sector
  • Strategic thinking ability with experience in transport policy, strategy formulation, and long-term planning initiatives
  • Proven mentoring and team leadership experience, with the ability to develop junior staff and foster collaborative working environments
