AECOM is seeking a passionate, skilled and innovative Engineering Intern to support the delivery of major tunnelling and underground infrastructure projects across Canada. The successful candidate will support the planning, design, analysis, and construction of complex underground works, including transportation tunnels, shafts, caverns, and underground stations. This is a new position. 

This position provides an opportunity to work with experienced geotechnical and tunnel engineers on some of Canada's largest infrastructure projects, while developing practical expertise in rock mechanics, geological engineering, geotechnical analysis, and underground construction.

Key Responsibilities

• Support rock engineering and geotechnical design activities for tunnels, shafts, caverns, and underground structures.
• Assist in the interpretation of geological, hydrogeological, and geotechnical investigation data.
• Perform engineering calculations related to excavation stability, ground support, and rock mass characterization.
• Assist with numerical modelling and analytical assessments of underground excavations.
• Support preparation of engineering reports, design memoranda, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Assist with tunnel and shaft support design, including rock bolts, dowels, shotcrete, lattice girders, steel sets, and reinforced linings.
• Participate in constructability reviews and geotechnical risk assessments.
• Review and organize site investigation data, borehole logs, laboratory testing results, and geological mapping records.
• Assist with construction monitoring programs and interpretation of instrumentation data.
• Participate in site visits and field inspections, including geological mapping and excavation observations under supervision.
• Collaborate with geotechnical, structural, civil, and tunnel engineering teams.

Minimum Requirements

• Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geological Sciences, Rock Engineering or related discipline, and must have completed at least 3 years of study. 

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong academic background and/or coursework in geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, engineering geology, soil mechanics, underground construction, or related areas.
• Coursework, research, or project experience related to rock mechanics, tunnel engineering, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, or numerical modelling is an asset.
• Previous co-op, internship, research, field, or project experience related to geotechnical engineering, mining, tunnelling, or underground infrastructure is considered an asset.
• Interest in underground excavations and rock engineering, with basic knowledge of rock mass behaviour, excavation stability, and ground support concepts for tunnels, shafts, caverns, or other underground structures.
• Familiarity with rock mass classification systems such as Rock Mass Rating (RMR), Q-System, or Geological Strength Index (GSI) is an asset.
• Basic knowledge of underground excavation methods, such as Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnelling, drill-and-blast excavation, Sequential Excavation Method (SEM/NATM), or shaft construction, is preferred.
• Exposure through coursework, research, or practical experience to numerical modelling or geotechnical software such as Rocscience applications (RS2, RS3, DIPS), FLAC2D/FLAC3D, PLAXIS, GeoStudio, UDEC, or 3DEC is an asset.
• Experience or coursework involving geological logging, drill core interpretation, site investigation data, or assessment of geotechnical information is desirable.
• Exposure to GIS, BIM, 3D geological modelling tools, or geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring data is considered an asset.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
